Q I will try out the centerline through scupper hole idea later this year and will let you know my results.  i will be trolling pretty deep water this summer (80-100ft), albeit at low speeds of around 1.2-1.4mph.  i also am considering a tahoe deep water trolling trip which would be in excess of 150ft and slightly higher speeds upwards of 2mph.

Is this in freshwater?  Just curious, why are you trolling so fast?

I fished lake up in WA a couple weeks back for lakers.  3# ball, 100-150' deep, 1 mph.  Downrigger in a gimbal mount in the flush mount behind the seat.  No problem.  Got one smallish laker too.

Lakes seem easier to get deep and stay deep as you don't have current to mess you up.

Sometimes I wish I used a rudder, but not bad enough that I'd ever get one just for downriggering.

Jeff just do on the other side like I did with you at Berryessa.  Put a rod holder out front, and use a rod with a line counter and heavy mono for the downrigger, and clip onto that, evens out the balance thing, and everyone is happy!  haha. :smt002

Just a side note on trolling weights ; even at kokanee trolling speeds you will need a 6 lb. weight to keep your line at the correct angle to the surface . You change that angle much and your line counter becomes a guessing game , lighter weights will work but you will have to recalculate your depth .

BTW , using braid will help in going to a lighter weight and will eliminate line hum also . Although all my trolling is done from a aluminum boat , I perfer to use the rod holders mounted to the boat .
