Now that's kind of silly...buying a DSLR for it's video capabilities.

I'm recalling my donation...hopefully the reverse telepathy thing works.   :smt003

DSLRs with video are the next big thing. They can give that nice shallow DOF that most video cams don't have, and the Canon 5D and 7D are the talk of Video Village.

Be forewarned...HD video is tempting, but if you want to view the video on your computer (works fine on the TV), you'd better have a computer with lots of CPU muscle. If not, audio plays fine' video stutters.

Bill's been taking all his pictures lately with his I-phone. Maybe he'll be willing to part with his 5d for less than he paid for it.  :smt044

Technically "5dm2"  ;)

The potential is definitely there for video, but lots of challenges still ahead.  For most consumers, image stabilization is one that bums me out.
 - Unless you drop the extra dough on IS lenses, you really should be using at very least a tripod base.
 - IS kills a lot of that cool narrow DOF effect you mentioned.
 - Wider angle lenses don't really offer IS, which makes sense from a strict photography perspective.
 - IS can also be noisy - in video samples without a lot of noise, you can hear it working in the background.   :smt009
Obviously for filmographers, many of these are moot points... but for the casual dSLR owner, they can be a real pain.

In the last half of 2009, Canon released their hybrid IS lenses, so I'm excited to see what the future brings.  Definitely a lot of possibilities...
As with most technology, the next couple generations of products should make huge leaps.   :smt004

I just wish the UW housings didn't cost more than my car is worth.   :smt010

Especially in the video department.

Guess if you can't be the best in intended function then picking one of the alternative features and being good in that aspect is cool too  :smt003

Andrew, I hang with a bunch of "freelance videographers" (read: jobless arrogant hippies) and they are all gaga over the new Cannons.

Ive authorized a $100 donation, all you have to do to receive it is donate $200 to my Islander 011 trip fund  :smt005

Donation sent by Calif. Condor.
Unfortunately they are on the brink of extinction and most hunters would like to not have them make it to their next destination. If however it does make it to you - you should have more than enough for your cause.
Good Luck

Especially in the video department.

I don't know where I heard it but I remember someone saying something like "that's like buying a nascar because it's got curb feelers".
