I didn't really get a good look at it - but I assume it's a vermillion.
I have never seen one that orange.  Beautiful looking fish though.

I take that back - I just checked out the shot from my camera and zoomed it - it's a starry/rosy.

I would guess rosy too.  BTW, starry and rosy are different species.

Joel,

Starry rockfish have (in addition to the large white blotches) lots of little white spots (hence "starry") .

While rosy rockfish just have the large blotches with purplish-red borders as well as a purple bar across the nape (between the eyes and dorsal fin).

Here's a good web page for sorting out all of the red rockfish with white spots.
http://www.afsc.noaa.gov/groundfish/rockfishguide/rockfish_whitespotted.htm

In fact, the whole site is really good for all rockfish (at least those that we share with Alaska)

Brian - thanks for that info.....why don't you just leave your phone number on the site so we can just use it as a "Rock Fish Hotline"  :smt002

Or, we can all have Brian's cell number and uplink images to him from the water so that if we have one of those hard calls he can give us the expert's analysis.........Good idea, eh Brian???............ :smt003

Sure, I'll try and identify fish from grainy pictures on my cell as long as you don't mind paying the fines when I'm wrong.
