Andy:
I want to join you guys!  But beware, I've never done any freediving before, my first time!  However, I do have all the gear (7mm suit, speargun, etc).  You may have to show me a few things though, including how to use a speargun.  I've seen some YouTube videos, but I'm more of a tactile learner.
Are you going to dive off your yak?
I'll send you a PM. thx.

hamachijohn, id love to show you all i know. Agarcia took me under his wing the first time I ever dove. Its pretty much like taking A horse to water, it seemed to come pretty naturally! My dive spot is very sheltered from the rough seas, worse case is the vis isnt very good but doable. Hope to see you guys out there!  :smt006

Number one rule; Do not spear teacher in the butt.
Andy, Dive on the side or behind him!

Diving with no gun is the first day lesson ...is it not?
The difference between concept and reality is often a light year apart. Functioning in the water, fitting gear, equalizing, swimming etc. all come first.
Spearfishing is dangerous in the wrong hands and some people squeeze off shots when startled!

Good luck and be safe!

Steve, I took your advice and practiced in the pool today.  Boy, was I glad I did!  First of all, despite seeing all the posts about using a 10% conditioner solution, I had one hell of a time putting the suit on for the first time.  After I finally got the suit on, I found out that the mask I bought used was leaking water.  Nothing wrong with the mask, it just didn't fit my face right.  I did the dry suction test before purchasing and it was fine, but it was a different story in the water. I tried to tighten the mask even more, but still water in the mask.  It's too bad since it was a nice mask with colored lens. The used mask I bought for my son worked fine though.  Then, after the fitting, I finally got used to the water.  It was only the pool, but good enough.  Water was cold, but the new suit kept me nice and warm.  I didn't bring the weight belt and fins to the pool, thinking I could still dive in the pool.  I found out quickly that the 7mm suit is buoyant as hell... and to think I was going to throw quarters in the pool and try to fetch it to practice.  The pool was lighted underwater, and I got spooked a couple of times by my own shadow in the water.  Hate to think how I'm going to react when the sea lion zips by me for the first time...
Keep in mind that I haven't even tried the fins and speargun yet!!
When I got home, I couldn't take the top half of my Picasso suit off me.  A couple times, I thought I was going to suffocate in it when I could only get half of it off me.  I finally asked my 8 year old daughter to help me pull it off.  she was laughing the whole time.
to make a long story short, Steve gave some good advice and I'm glad I practiced today.  If I hadn't, I probably would have spent the whole saturday trying to put on my suit while Andy is spearing all the fish!  Haven't gone wrong yet heeding the advice from NCKA yet, and thanks again.  If I see you at SWS saturday, make sure to stay BEHIND me- I might mistake you for a ling

Now....directly adress and spend time and effort making your worst and most uncomfortable thing into a good, comfortable and positive thing.
Do that several times and the list of things that ruin a dive get smaller and smaller until you have what is called.....experience.

The internet has a way of offering up the results and rewards without the reminder of what it takes to earn them. Everyone loves the shot of a sturgeon draped over the kayakers legs.....
How many people want to see shots of a kayaker endlessly sitting for wet hours after cold hours and catching nothing? That is sturgeon fishing interrupted once in a great while with a fish.

If you cannot pay the dues, you cannot reap the reward.
next comes;
functioning with the proper weight......using fins and practicing flexible mobility in the water .
Then ....
turning upside down, holding breath and diving slowly down while feeling at home.
The very last thing in diving is the spearing of fish. That happens only after everything else is done well.

Good advice, learn to be comfortable in the water first! That includes being able to don and doff( take your mask off and on in the water) your facemask without any panic or stress. Be comfortable in the water no matter what happens! I have had my mask kicked off my face by the diver in front of me numerous times.
Get expierience first, then take a gun, it will make your diving a lot more fun and safer for you.
