salmon trolling off Point Pinos a few year ago with da boys.  total trip was 13 plus miles probably about 4 miles offshore.  We were looking for a certain depth and kept paddling till we hit it.  Paddling back was tough, the shore seemed to stay the same distance no matter what.

Also had a 12 mile day but that was paddling parallel to the coast.  Most trips are more like 4-7 miles.

me and a guy were talking about kayaks and what their range is for fishing, and we got to wondering whats the farthest people go out. So i'm curious whats the farthest you've ever gone out to fish? We're talking ocean not a lake unless its the great lakes. The farthest I've ever gone was about 1/2 mile out.

A couple miles out of Bodega to get out to Dux
A couple miles out of Moss for Salmon back in 2006
20 miles from other humans, but still near shore in Sitka.
Approximately 5 miles from my put in to fishing at buoy 4 up in Kodiak.

I'm not the marathon paddler that bluekayak is, so it seems like 10 miles is a nice comfortable distance, assuming less than snotty conditions. Uglier conditions or longer paddles are still felt a couple days later, but I'm getting to be an Old Fart...

8 miles out
usually off the Muir to Dux stretch 4-5 miles out

on the ocean distance is only a number mostly like a superstition
big numbers don't mean risk and little numbers don't mean safety

8 is a lucky number in Chinese culture and my wife is Chinese
she's making me superstitious  :cowboy_smoke:

Now that's friggin far.  I would have been Yellowkayak for that one!

Sean (SBD) and I went out about 3 miles off Fort Bragg one day for salmon - on a nice day.  We were mostly in the fleet, so it was pretty safe.  The one scary part was during the paddle out, right in the middle of our shark stories, I spotted a big dorsal out of the corner of my eye.  It turns out we got buzzed by a humpback, still scary but not as bad as what we first assumed.

On another trip out of Albion on a nice day, we were about 3 miles out and someone on the bluffs called 911.  We got visited by the CG, the mendo fire dept SAR, and the Albion fire department.  Uh, thanks guys, do you want me to jump in the water or something to justify your boat rides?

I've paddled from pt Pedro near LA to Avalon Harbor on Catalina several times (26 nm) Fishing wasn't the primary reason but certainly got a line wet. If you include the great lakes then I spent the summer of '96 circumnavigating both Lakes superior and Michigan that was around 1200 nm with a 75 nm open water x-ing from Saugatuck Harbor to Chicago. We lived on fish as this trip was done primarily on the cheap, survivor man style. These were in canoes and sea-kayaks. My furthest Offshore in an SOT has been a wimpy 4-5 nm  miles, paddling from Mad river outlet to Trinidad harbor which is a total distance of 9nm

redwoodfox - the 3 miles off Trinidad was SW of the Head with the swellrider and we had followed the salmon fleet - I caught a 21.5 pounder right when we got out there and then we proceeded to get blanked for the next few hours.  (see avatar pic by swellrider - that powerboat in the background while I'm netting a nice king is just priceless   :smt007)

I've done 10 miles or more of total paddling several times and it's a good day - especially on an X-Factor.

As for super ballsey coastal treks in NorCal, check out "Mike's Kayak Journal" - that guy is like Superman.

Yeah, uh, I'd include that.  Holy shit, now that's paddling.

I'm so bored I decided to make a quickie flick with a little offshore salmon trolling footage.  I cannot wait to get back out OTW...
