Hey Mooch,

Are you using braid with a mono topshot on the spin outfit?

I tried braid on a spinning outfit, but it didn't cast well because it was too limp, I think. Maybe it was the cheap braid I used...

Also, your baitcasters are lefthand crank I see. Some "experts" told me I should crank with your dominant hand (which is how my baitcasters are by default). I did swap the handle on my spin outfit so that I would cast-right/crank-right with it also, feels a bit weird.

Hey Mike,

All my reels have braid for backing. I find it better, cheaper and more convenient. For example, my revo is loaded with 20# braid and about 5 feet of 20# mono for rockfish....and if I have to switch to a lighter top shot, I cut off the existing 5 ft. mono and replace it with 10 feet of 8# mono if I fish for stripers in Lake Mendo....that's just how I roll  :smt002

*same goes for my spinning out fit....I loaded it with 10# braid and change my top shot accordingly to what I'm fishing for. Example: Fishing for Trout, I'll put 30 ft. of 4# mono top shot and if I'm fishing for bass, I'll up the mono to 8 to 12#'s.

Regarding cranking with the dominant hand = for me = NEGATORY :smt002. My dominant right arm does the "heaving up and down motion" with the rod while my weak hand (left) reels in the slack = This IMO, makes more sense to me  :smt045

AND...when casting a bait caster, I cast with my right hand (step 1) and reel in with my left hand (step 2)

Now, if you cast with your right hand (step 1) and then switch the rod to your left hand (step 2) and start reeling in with your right hand (step 3)...

You be the judge :smt002

LEFTY'S RULE  :smt109 (by the way, I'm really a righty :smt001)

I hold the rod in my left hand and netting the fish with my dominant hand!

I am a true lefty so use my dominant hand on the pole, weak hand on the reel.  Of course I fished for years as a kid with the spinning reel "upside down" and now it just feels wrong to use it the "right way."

Eugene,

It looks from your new avatar pic that your right is your dominant hand.....at least for bracing. Sorry couldn't resist.
