Met alshobieoutback and porky at capitola wharf at around 6 am. Got on the water to a foggy bay. Rigged up and caught bait right at the end of the wharf. Then headed to black point area. We all bounced around in the kelp for a long time with nothing biting. I tried some metal jigs in various colors with and without a fly about a foot above. Then switched to six oz leadhead using root beer, green and white, still nothing. We then went closer to sc and went to 45 foot depth rigged for halibut using squid, and live mackeral (about 4 inches long) nothing. The wind picked up which blew out the fog, but really killed the drift as it got real quick. Decided to go back to the kelp and get out of the wind waves. I rigged up with another leadhead and fly combo. Got a nice hit and waited a second for the return tap and set the hook. I knew it would be another nice fish and it had some fight. I readched around for the net and, of course, it was snagged on my sabiki net! God i hate those! Anyway i was drifting pretty fast to the kelp while keeping some tension on the fish, fighting the net holy crap i needed more arms! Cut the sabiki and freed the net, now i could finally work on the fish. Got it close to the boat and could tell it's a ling. Pulled it onboard and my measurement was on markings along my footwell and i knew it was close. Called al over for a measurement and his hog trough said what i expected. 23 1/2" ling. I sent him back to grow a little more.

Alshobie caught a few blues or blacks in a nice school and porky also caught a few fish but i will let them tell their story. Hope al got the pics of the ling.

Overall a weird day foggy then windy then sunny. Never got any kind of bite going with all the changes maybe the fish wre off the bite. As usual we always have a great time. Porky and alshobieoutback are great company.

Nice report Stoggie...I was out there from 11-3ish...wish I would have met up with you guys!!!

Next time!!

Yeah, it was weird how the weather changed throughout the day...by 1pm it was like a flat calm, hot, glassy lake!!

Sincerely,

Jim

Fun fishing with ya Stoggie and Porky!!!  It was slow starting but then I found one spot in the kelp with a school of blues that hit my line every drop!  Missed a few hookups, but ended up keeping a couple of them to steam for dinner.  Hey, first fish caught on my new yak too!

I forgot my waterproof camera, so only took a couple shots of Stoggie and his ling.

Good on ya guys! Water looks nice, too. I'll have to get my lazy self down there one weekend to hook up with you all. Been a while since I launched from Cap.

Pretty lingcod! The last 3 legals I picked up came up from inside thick kelp, and all were the same 26-27" length.

Excellent photo Al! With a handle like Stoggie, he better be chompin' on a see-gar!

Nice report. A fish is a fish even a C & R one.

I smoke cigars while I fly fish--pretty much the only time I smoke--keeps the Skeeters away and that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Insects most hate Bolivars and Punch from my experience  BTW ;-)

Good company on the water is something that will likely be remembered longer than the fish we catch.  Way to hook it up, Fellas.   :smt001
