Wow, that really shouldn't be here.  Climatologist are seeing really early signs of El Nino.  I think this is a BIG one.

This brings up a stupid question....

What does the DFG regs say about these oddities? Are we able to keep them even if they are not listed in the regs specifically, or listed is a "season regulation"

Not had much experience with ocean regs other than our local and state rockfish regs etc.

I assume these are covered in a different section? Can you keep anything caught except for fish specifically listed in season or take regs?

Any info is appreciated.

Stoggie

That was the first thought that crossed my mind " is it legal to keep???"when at first not even knowing what kind of fish it was exaclty.

As far as I can surmise, the take of finescale triggerfish is permitted, with no closed season, closed hours, or minimum size limit pursuant to section 27.56.  The limit is ten pursuant to § 27.60(a).

There does not appear to be any specific state or federal management of any fish of the genus Balistes in the Pacific.

I caught (and ate) a trigger that looked very much like yours (same size too) off Capitola in 2005 (another El Nino year?) using squid strips on a rf rig.I removed and dried the trigger spine. My little bro stumped his classmates with it at show and tell.

I asked a DFG Warden about it and he said it was rare, but not unheard of. Because Capitola is so protected by Pleasure pt., the area has it's own micro climate and usually stays a bit warmer.

If you look at the burglar bars on the North side of Capitola Boat and Bait there is a trigger in the window.Coincidence? I don't think so.

Cool catch. :smt004

There are a lot of these in Santa Monica Bay down south.  Uncommon catch in Capitola, pretty sweet.
