I've been a member for more than a year; but I spend most of my time lurking and soaking up information. I'm finally able to contribute something.

I went down to Monterey yesterday with a couple friends on our maiden voyage in the ocean.  The morning started off a little rough.  I forgot the squid in the freezer at home and we got a caught in speed trap on Hwy 1 just south of Castroville.

We arrived at Lover's Point with an overcast sky and calm water.  It looked great.  We got the three boats down to the water and put in around 9:30am.

There were four of us fishing with various colored jigs.  Between us we caught about a dozen rock fish and one under-ling in 25-30 feet of water.  We just worked the holes in the kelp beds.  Most were sent back but we kept a few.

Around noon, we reeled up and paddled down in front of the aquarium to see my kids who were waiting outside on the balcony.  We fished for another 30 min or so in the Henry Ricketts area, then started the paddle back to Lover's point.  The wind wasn't too bad; but it was a challenge for sure.  I definitely started questioning the value of my 5 gallon live well.

All in all, we had a great time, the weather was beautiful, and we brought some meat home.  Cannot wait to do it again.

 Hi Pinseeker

Lovers's Point is a beautiful launch and fishing area but was declared a marine reserve in 2008. You might not want to going through there with fishing gear on board. The DFG might not be so kind to you. I made a similiar mistake when I was new, there aren't always signs posted in these areas. I would highly recommend the launch at Coral street in pacific grove. Have fun and stay safe.

Great 1st Report pinseeker (another golfer?)!
Yeah, watch out for the Lovers Pt SMR---you have to paddle out and around the Pt to the NW (left) to fish legal water. Paddling to the right towards the aquarium is not advised unless you have a GPS...plus the fishing is much better the other direction. Coral St might be a better launch.

Nice report Pinseeker...ditto on what everyone else has said regarding Lovers.  Coral Street is an easy launch and can be great fishing.  I was there last Sunday and caught a handful of rockies (yeah, yeah...I know Abking, "where's da pics!?")  :smt002  I'd recommend trying that launch next time you hit the salt.

Those Chippies on Hwy. 1 can be tricky...I've caught them trying to catch me on that stretch of 101/156 several times as well.  Sucks if you got a ticket...at least you caught some fish though!  :smt003

Thanks for the report. Lovers point was one of my favorit places to take the kids while i lurked the kelp beds on the yak. But they took that away too. :smt013 You could paddle through the red areas as long as you have all your rods on SAFE! no lines in the water while passing through.

Ya! wheres the Picxxx. :smt001
