I'm thinking I may be getting a little soft or something after looking at those pix. I may need to club the next one or at least get some blood on the deck. Actually, I was ready for a big fin to appear any minute... especially since my little friend kept on sniffing and looking into the water. But, the Landlord let us stay rent free this time. All in all... another great day. All kinds of wildlife out there. Whales, dolphin... seals.

Freddie:

How long did he just chill on your yak?  Did you share some bait with the little guy.

I think we should all pitch in and get Freddie a Sea World wetsuit with a headset microphone so he educate everyone on the water on seal behavior and tendencies.

What do you think Freddie?:

Actually, that little guy was pretty tame. He chilled with me for about 30 minutes. I thought he'd like a bite to eat, so I tossed him some squid but, he wasn't having it. He tried to get passed my FF a couple of times but, couldn't manage it. I was thinking about standing up on my yak but, I thought he'd get scared. Then, I tossed him a little rockie and he played with it like a kitty playing with a mouse. I paddled with him around for a while before he jumped off to  visit Stuie and Adam... then, he found his way back to me and jumped in my tank well. I cleared some room for him and he just chilled. I even got a chance to reach back and pet him. Pretty cool stuff... if you're into that sort of thing. Nice break from the fishing though. Then, he jumped off and didn't even look back. I guess the coast was clear...

Joe-

I don't do too well in wetsuits and I'm not much of a public speaker...  :smt002

Jim-

I'm sure if you were around and fried something up... he'd be all over it.

Pretty interesting experience to say the least.  My wife got a kick out of the photo.  She's a marine mammal biologist and said either something was in the area or chasing it (shark or another larger sea lion) or it was tired and needed some rest.  She said it looks like a pretty young male.  When she worked for NOAA on San Miguel Island (which has a breeding colony of 120,000 CA sea lions not to mention 20,000 elephant seals and thousands of N. fur seals) she would have juvenile sea lions follow her all the time and some were hard to lose.

My wife ...... marine mammal biologist....said either something was in the area or chasing it (shark or another larger sea lion) .....

 :sad2:

I wonder tho about letting 'em get too close and friendly - I have had larger animals pop up, check me out and look like they were gonna try and steal my catch - I hope it would not be like bears and trash cans.....

Don't be poking fun at my ghetto rigged FF... I guess after all these years with it like that... it never occurred to me to "clean" it up.

Sounds to me like your wife did indeed note that the pictured marine mammal was a juvenile sea lion, and not a seal :)

For those of you calling it a seal, note the rear flippers that are pointed somewhat forward, and the itty bitty "ears". Both indicate sea lion vice seal, though I'm sure that bluefin17's wife can point out more, easy to spot differences.

Best regards from the OCD angler,
Scott

Funny thing is that when I read the title, I thought Freddie was wearing a wetsuit. :-) Glad to see the board shorts. Sorry I missed the hookup.

Yeah, seals can't stand up on their pectoral fins like that. The fact that its a baby sealion is probably scarier than a harbor seal or something. Because higher likelyhood a shark scared it up there...and where's mama? Don't want that beast thinking it's baby is in danger haha!

Anybody watch Finding Nemo? (son's favorite movie right now)

That is a really neat picture of Freddie and the sealion Chuck. It looks like a
front cover of a kayak magazine.
