I thought I may have an opportunity to fish for salmon in the ocean next month.  The season has always opened on the 2nd Saturday in February from Pt. Arena to Horse Mtn., but, as I found out from DFG yesterday, not this year...   :smt009

Ocean salmon fisheries off the California coast will not open earlier than May 1, 2009 according to the federal government. The Pacific Fishery Management Council's Preseason Report III - Analysis of Council Adopted Management Measures for 2008 Ocean Salmon Fisheries, located at www.pcouncil.org/salmon/salpreIII08/salpreIII08.pdf, provides this information on pg. 13:

"8.2 Recreational
Chinook fisheries south of Cape Falcon are closed for the remainder of 2008 due to the current status of SRFC. They are currently scheduled to re-open March 15, 2009 in the areas between Cape Falcon and Humbug Mountain, and no earlier than May 1, 2009 in the areas south of Humbug Mountain. The March 15, 2009 opening can be modified by in-season action at the March 2009 Council meeting."

The final season will be decided at the April Council meeting in Millbrae.

I did hear a rumor though that they may give us a few days this season...  If that happens and WX permits I'll be living on the water for the window(s).
