I will personally attest that firing a 12 guage is not a problem, if you are aiming within about 45 degrees of the centerline of the boat. I did not try shooting directly perpendicular to the centerline, but I was also in a skinny boat (23" beam). Personally, I feel that jump shooting waterfowl is best done from a canoe, where the "shooter" is up front, and the "motor" is in the back. A tandem kayak would be equally as good.

I also hunted Shasta from a kayak a couple years back. Virtually no deer to be seen, let alone a legal buck. This trip was a week after a big storm had come through and another hunter I talked to theorized that the deer were no longer needing to congregate near the lake. I'd have tagged out if I had purchased a bear tag though. I won't bother to hunt the lake this way again, too limiting.

Regards,
Scott

I wander how much rock and roll you would get from shooting a 300 ultra mag from a kayak?
Wow... that might be a little scary... especially if you were shooting directly to your right or left.  It's probably a good thing for us that it's illegal to shoot deer from a boat otherwise I might be tempted when that huge buck shows up on the bank.

I used to hunt, but haven't gone for years.  I get my share of meat, however.  Lots of hunters in my hood that suck at fishing, we trade frequently and everyones happy.

I just go hunting back home.  Less hassle and better hunting for fewer $.  Last year I watched a herd of 4-8 does every evening waiting on the buck to come in, my dad bagged him 2 days after I left - big 9 pointer.

A little off the topic of deer, but ...
I met a dude at Tomales who takes his Tarpon 140 duck hunting.  He said he can get to really shallow places where the people in boats can not get to.  Sounds intriguing ... and I did just get my hunter's safety certificate.

I've heard duck hunting from kayaks is getting more popular.  In that case you really want a kayak color that blends into the environment like camo.

I jump shoot ducks on our creek some times.  It is too small for a yak though.

I am a hunter and I want to start using my kayak for duck hunting I have been in bow range of a buck on my kayak were I had a tag for it was before the season and hunting isn't allowed on the lake anyway but it was fun stalking from my kayak.    I am not aware of a law that says you cant shoot deer from a boat.  never really looked into it but I don't think its baned as long is the boat doesn't have a motor in the water.

yaks are great for getting away from pressure, as far as transporting a deer  I always skin and quarter them where they drop, they don't take up much room that way and the meat cools quicker.  I know a guy who paddled about 3-4 miles with a 200lbs halibut on his yak so i guess bringing deer home whole is an option but why carry what you can't eat?
