Despite my screen name I'm not a grandpa (it's just a nickname).  I'm a 26 yr old kayak fisher from Virginia and a an active TKAA (www.tkaa.org) member.  I'm coming out to Monterey to visit my sister and her family from Oct. 29th-Nov. 3rd.  Would anyone be willing show a yakker from the eastside the ropes of fishing on the westside?  I can provide all my own tackle, pfd, etc. but I would need to borrow a yak, unless someone can suggest a place that would let me rent one and fish from it.  I would not need to be babysat.  Just looking to get on the water, meet some fellow yakkers, and maybe even hook up on some fish!

Thanks! Tight Lines!

-Ryan

Hi Gramps and welcome to ncka. I live near the SC harbor and go out whenever I get a chance. I've got a 4 month old daughter so I'm not getting out as much as I used to. I don't have an extra yak but if you can acquire one I'd be happy to paddle with ya (weather permitting). I know some good spots in that area. Feel free to drop me a pm when we get closer to those dates. I'm only available to go out on the weekend so if that works for you then just keep me posted.

Welcome to the site, Gramps!
At that time of year, your best option will be rockfish. The other options are inland trout or stripers.

That time of year, the ocean conditions starts to turn sour. So the weather will be your main obstacle. Here’s a good site to check marine forecasts: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/marine/zone/west/mtrmz.htm
And here’s a link to the ocean regs: http://www.dfg.ca.gov/marine/bfregs2008.asp

As expensive as the 2-day or out-of-state licenses cost, it would be a good idea to monitor the weather so you get your money’s worth. It would suck to buy a 2-day permit then get stuck on dry land because there are 10-12 foot waves.
Good luck,
PK

hey grampaw:

I live in Santa Cruz and am friends with both the above malefactores.

Also have a few extra yaks, so even if I can't get out with you, you have a boat, paddle, seat, etc.

Keep us posted/

Sweeeet! :smt003  Thanks for the good info and the yak offer!  You all sound like a great bunch of guys and if the weather works out (and even if it doesn't) I can't wait to get to meet you all and get out on the water or just grab a few beers and share opposing coast fishing stories.  I'll keep a close eye on the weather and post up closer to trip time.

Thanks again!

-Ryan

Even is the weather is not so great for the ocean that time of year is pretty hot for schoolie stripers in the forebay, a little over an hour inland from Monterrey. Not east coast stripers but a lot of fun on light tackle.

I have a double kayak and you can take the front spot if you have trouble finding a ride.

As the dates approach, keep me informed.  Based on my fishing skills in the ocean, I can't necessarily show you the expertise of SCAllen but, I would love to go out with you (Weather Permitting).  It would be fun and am looking forward to it.

I'm going to try and pick the best day weather wise of the Oct 30th, 31st, or Nov 2nd.  I'm not sure what town in Monterey, But I'll ask my sister and find out and post up.  I know it's probably near the Military Base because my brother-n-law and sister are Navy. (also i think it's near the Trader Joe's if that helps...haha)

I might be able to go out on one of those days.  Otherwise, I have the equipment you need....Andy?  If you take grandpa out and need yak, pfd, paddle, rods reels etc, just let me know.
