I've been reading this board and other kayak boards for a while and really want to get into fishing from a kayak. Fresh and saltwater but I'm wondering what's the best way to get started?

It seems like a load of fun and will only add to my time on the water ( which is suffering because of kids and wife duties among other things) but I think kayak fishing could give me more time on the water since I don't have a boat . Anyway any and all help yall can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Well posting this question here is a good start.  The next thing to do would be to getting into some kayaks to try them out.  The best, quickest method would be to hire a kayak fishing guide for the day.  SCAllen in Santa Cruz and Scwafish in Ukiah are both regulars here who happen to be kayak fishing guides.  Sean "Scwafish" also has his kayak fishing university which would be ideal if you can do it.  After that, the next best thing would be to find some friendly soul with an extra kayak willing to take you out with them.  When you decide to buy your own kayak for fishing, test/demo as many you can before buying.

Welcome to the board Red. If you are in Santa Clara, probably the best source for demoing a kayak is with Outback Adventures. They are located on Saratoga Avenue in Saratoga and they have demo days out at Stevens Creek Reservoir.

Good Luck!! :smt004

Welcome to the board, Red.  :smt006  The other bit of advice I'd suggest is that you start working on your WAF account now...that's Wife Approval Factor; a surplus of which will allow you to hit the water in your new yak more often.  Something I expect you'll be wanting to do once the Madness sets in... :smt003

Most of the kayak rental shops have a Demo deal, that allows you to try as many different kayaks as you want. I know Kayak Connection and Monterey Bay Kayaks both do this. Even if you're not fishing, just paddle them around to see if it seems like something you'd want to do. If you like it, go grab a rod+a box of tackle+some bait and do it to it.
The thing about kayak fishing: it can be as simple (or complex) as you want to make it.
Good luck!

I got a loaner if you wanna get out on the water bro.  Fat and stable, not a fast paddler but gets the job done.
I just blew out my knee the other day so I'm on the injured reserve for a couple weeks, no salt.  Slight chance I'll be givin the sweetwater a go this weekend.

Shoot me a pm.
