Seems like a moot point considering the North Central area doesn't open to rockfishing until June 1st anyways....right? [Not referring to the YRCAs as moot; just saying it seems pointless to check the forecast if it isn't open til June.]

Haha, not likely that I'll be fishing the opener (possibly never again) :smt003

My wife is scheduled to be induced on May 1st which means I won't be fishing the rockfish opener until my daughter is old enough to fish it with me on her birthday  :smt004 (if I'm lucky)  :smt003

Congrats FF on the upcoming birth of your daughter.  Is it your first?  Whether it is or isn't, it'll be special.

I can empathize with missing out on fishing.  My daughter was born 2 weeks early (today is actually her 1st birthday) due to a minor fender bender and now I'll pretty much miss every opening weekend of trout season until she wants to join me or until I can talk her into celebrating her birthday the weekend before. :smt003  Shame on me, I'm so selfish.

UPDATE
Harbor launch cancelled.

Dropping at Davy early Thurs am. If it sucks, we'll go surfing instead. If that sucks, we'll just go to work.
Again, company welcome.

So uminchu informed me that Stillwater north is within  the new yellow closure area.  I am assuming he is correct on this, but the forcast for the 1st is wind.......damn it :smt013.  I'm gonna be on a weather watch for going north.  Otherwise I will fish for halibut.

Jim
Jim, where'd Naoaki get his information?  The most southern YRCA (Yelloweye Rockfich Conservation Area) is just south of Fort Bragg.

Here's the link to DFG regarding yelloweye closures.
http://www.dfg.ca.gov/marine/inseason2008.asp
and here are the maps of the actual YRCAs from North to South.

Brian, we were gonna go up to Shelter cove (not Stillwater cove) for May 1st 40 10 opener...

& Frank, I got your message but I am not familiar with the area... so might try to go get some butts or Lake Sonoma steelies instead...

Just a headsup for those planning to fish the Big Sur coast on the opener, pay attention to the swell and wind forcast. Over the weekend the seas were heavy with wind and whitecaps. I did see a few kayaks on car tops but nothing in the water. I was in Big Sur over the weekend working the Marathon. Seas were a bit calmer the closer we got to Carmel and Monterey. I'll be launching out of MBK on Thursday morning with Aaron and a few others. Monitoring channel 69. Company welcome.

Why do the fishgods conspire against us?
I've been monitoring the marine forecast for the past 10 days. And it just keeps getting worse! As of right now, the NOAA forecast for INside the Bay says:
.THU...W WINDS 5 TO 15 KT. WIND WAVES 1 TO 3 FT.  NW SWELL 7 TO 10 FT. PATCHY FOG
Yeah, so Big Sur is not an option. The forecast has been calling for heavy wind (not surprising). But the swell keeps increasing. Major bummer.
I'm still going fishing. It just won't be as comfortable as I hoped for.

I second the major bumer. It looks like an early start may be best to put in a few hours before it gets real crappy. Still undecided where to start. Somewhere a little protected sounds best. I was out of the SC harbor this Sunday. Looking for some bait or accidential by catches while trying for Halibut off Natural Bridges. It was a real shocker only one fist on for the morning. Most likely a Ling Cod, off after a few seconds.

So DFG dropped the yelloweye conservation area closures, but the wind and swell are looking iffy.  So I think Naoaki  and I are hitting the bay for halibut.  But see you all at Mendo, Friday.

PK's right.  Anyone who was thinking of going to Shelter Cove for May 1st - WATCH OUT!  It doesn't open there until June 1st.  40-10 line is several miles north of there.  I should've realized this when we were first talking about it, but I got all caugth up in the excitement!   :smt001

Wherever you go, remember that it's not worth taking your chances in rough water for some rockfish or a lingcod.  Wait for the right conditions.
