Took the kids out to the South Jetty for an hour right before sunset.  They played in the dunes while I tossed a little jig.  I saw 6 guys walk off the jetty - 2 individuals and 2 pairs.  They all had caught lings up to 10# and one guy said he had a 16 pounder on Tuesday.  They all had blacks too.  I didn't get touched from the first rock I was on.  Then I spent my last 20 minutes on a rock 100' away and caught and released 5 little blacks.  It's great to see the jetty come back after the bad effects of the homeless encampment - I'm pretty sure they never released anything, and living there 24/7 means they fished alot...  I live in Loleta and I remember going down there in the mid 90's and not getting bit at all...

Dude!...a couple of weeks ago a pic was in the local paper of a guy named Eric. It was an article about the mendo/humbolt? coast and the dude was wearing a hat like yours....i couldn't tell if it was you, but after this post of shoreline fishing? maybe it was you! ..was it?
How do you reel in a big ling from shore, along a jetty? that sounds like cut-line everytime.
Thanks for the pics&port!  can't wait to get up there this season!

I don't think it was me, Adam - what paper?  I'm curious about it now!

I haven't caught tons of lings from the rocks and none from the jetties.  I'd imagine pulling a big one in at the jetties would be tough due to the big holes they could hunker down in, but off the rocks it's not too hard - keep 'em up.

The guy fishing off the jetty in the photo here was using a float that allowed the line to go in and out and he had a little greenling on there for bait.  What he was doing was kinda like poke-poling in that he would just put his line out at his feet and let the greenling just drift down into the holes between the huge boulders of the jetty.  He caught an undersized ling in about 5 minutes.  I think a key to the jetty fishing is to stay moving / keep trying new holes.

it was the ContraCostaTimes.....the guy was holding a hand-sized rock fish in his palm for the shot!   and just said that fishing can be done from the shore up there and w/a pic&name.
Even if it wasn't you?  it looked like you!  WIERD?!

Eric,
I had a key when I lived up there and that was one of my favorite places to fish.  It's a good place for salmon in the middle of the summer (I know, not this summer).  I used to sabiki anchovies and little perch at England Marine in Eureka then make the long drive out there.  Lots of lings out there, but there was only a few times when I left there without a limit of 2 (old limit) fat cabezon on the poke pole.  There are so many 10+ pound cabezon in those rocks you wouldn't believe.  Low tide, stick the poke pole in about 4 or 5 ft. with some squid or ab guts and wham.  Bring a net as well, hard to control on the poke pole.  Nice report, you had to get me all excited about Humboldt again.  Hopefully see you in May, pray for good conditions!!!

My dad had a key that we used, but I've never gone down there much.  You haven't needed a key for a few or maybe several years now - the gate gets opened in the morning and closed an hour after sunset, with no camping at the beach.

Hope to see you in May.   :smt001
