I went down to Manresa today to see if I could get some perch. Got there about an hour before high tide. Some huge waves were breaking.  I used a steel 1/2 ounce barrel sinker with about one foot of play above and below the sinker and used 6 pound test leader with a 1 1/2 inch motor oil speckly grub. On one of my casts, I thought I had a snag, then the rod bent over almost into a U shape. After getting my drag set, the striper fight was on. It took about 10 minutes, and just as I was landing the fish, I got a little too excited and the leader broke. I'm estimating that it was about a 10 pound striper. If I was patient and had continued giving it line when it ran, I don't think the leader would have snapped. Oh well, live and learn! After that, I caught two tiny perch. It was a beautiful day on the beach!

Damn!! Thats a tough one, big stripers on the surf, maybe some 12lb leader next time...
I caught a 3 LBer at Muir last year and it gave one helluva yank. It even bent out the grub hook. And was sooo yummy! Next time Bro!

I didn't know that big stripers would hit those little grubs. I was expecting perch at best. Nice surprise!

A few years ago fishing off a flat out there at a low tide I had a school of about 50 stripers run right by me. Cool to see that many cruising!

I've seen quite a fe being caught out there in the summer, but not this early- and yes they do slam grubs!!

That sounds cool.  It's always exciting to have the prospect of catching multiple species.   There's probably a chance a ling would slam that some time too.  :smt001

That would have been nice to see, and be present for, and even better trying for my self.  I didn't have any plans for Saturday morning, until I spotted some flooding in my lower yard.  As I stepped out front to investigate, I found the source of the flood.  Water main split at the water meter, on my side!  Cold water shower after my nice hot morning shower was not fun!
The water main breaking, pretty much decided what I would be doing rest of day!
It's all done and fixed now.

Ganoderma,
I have only caught two stripers off the beach down there and they were some of the most exciting fights ever.  What a surprise after expecting perch!  Water looked nice this morning.

I've seen quite a fe being caught out there in the summer, but not this early- and yes they do slam grubs!!

I surf those beaches a lot during the winter, and I always stop and talk to some of the regular fishermen.  For the last three years, every time, the story is either caught a striper that week or the week before. Earlier this winter, the waves were good and I surfed the same obscure sandbar for a few days straight. I saw the same shore fishermen every day and each day he had a striper.  All around 20-25".  This was all to my surprise, as I thought is was more of a summer fishery as well.

great report!

I use 10lb leader and seem to get a lot of hits, I don't think you need to go so low as 6lb, the perch are not leader shy according the the zen of perch fishing web site where one guy uses 20lb and outfishes his buddy just to prove it.
