The ocean has been a dream the past two days.  I got to play hooky today and head over the hill to Fish Bay.  I got my bud Tim to go too.  He couldn't get out of town until after me, so I headed out and planned to meet him on the beach.  I got to McNutt Gulch and loaded up my little 9' Roleez hotrod.  The beach trudge felt great today.  I used my GPS for the first time on that hike - 1.4 miles it turns out to be...  Found a decent sized cabezon head on the trail - good photo op.  Tim caught up to me with his 4 wheeler as I was approaching Fish Bay.  We got dressed and I paddled out to toss hook and line in for a bit as the tide fell.  Tim started searching around for an ab - the water was clearer than I've seen it there in years.  4-6' of vis!  I didn't fish for long - had to get in that beautiful water.  I pulled on the rest of my suit, weightbelt, mask, flippers and tools and paddled over to where Tim was diving.  We cruised some usual spots and enjoyed the great vis.  Then we headed into some uncharted territory - the chances for a 10 were there...  I saw several fish and should've had a spear:  blacks, greenling, a china, a cab - Tim saw a ling that he said probably went 10 pounds.  I found a few dozen abs - mostly mature with many over 9".  Pulled a deep 9 and 7/8 and another nice 9 and 3/4.  Tim grabbed a few 9ers.  I didn't end up catching anything on the hook and line - had one fat grassy up in some kelp and could see it, but it got all caught up and swam off when I yanked my hook out of the kelp.  The fishing's been slow there, but it was a diving day.  Tim hit the trail for home and I stayed and fished a bit more/took more pics/enjoyed my last brew.  The trail back was nnnniiiiiiicccccceeeeeeee..........    :smt004 :smt007 :smt006 :smt003 :smt001

Nice pics! The second and third from the bottom look like the classic Survivorman self portraits.

awesome report;
I stare in slack jawed incredulity .... but then again...Abking is the man...
And gets to fish nearby in Fish Bay. . . er...Where the hell is Fish Bay again?
Oh yes...$200 round trip in gas from here!...and then a secret spot to boot.
And when you get there...its a decathalon workout to get to the water?
Jealous are we that can't, won't or aren't doing it.
Way to go Abking!

classic Survivorman self portraits.

You nailed it, Dustin!   :smt003

er...Where the hell is Fish Bay again?

Next Spring/Summer I'm thinking we camp out down there - competition rockfishing, pick a few snails, yak around the channels and inlets...  Drink a few brews...  Bonfire...  As for the long drive, if we plan around good tides and get lucky on the wind the swell height wouldn't matter as much...  I think Tote would be up for it - the more the merrier!   :smt001

Nice Buckets!! I am planning on heading up for one last dive this weekend, probably around Ocean COve area. Definetely not the sweet spot that you ahve but hopefully I can manage some decent. Count me in on next year I would to explore new spot. Have a good one! I am always out for new recipes on how other prepare their ab. Lately I like to take roasted green chile with jack cheese rolled up in a nice chunk of ab or marinated in  kung pao sauce  or terriyaki . mmm I am getting hungry just thinking about   :cook

Ummmm...that sounds REALLY good right now! Maybe add some Sriracha to the Kung Pao sauce and mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Man, I wish we could get abs down here.

Hey Abking, thanks for the awesome report and epic photos. Is fish bay destined to become a SMR/SMCA/MLB/etc??? Because that would suck. If its still open next April-May I am going to charge it.

Pat - I doubt that Fish Bay would be affected much by the preserve process, but who knows?  They haven't started evaluating the northern-most coast yet as far as I know...

There's a set of rocks about a quarter mile offshore of Fish Bay that may be prime halibut territory.  I want a Pacific Hali next year!

See you in the Spring.   :smt001

Putting Rolleeze to the test! I'm glad someone took advantage of the flat conditions. Just to be on the water would be enough!

I would make the trek from Santa Cruz for that! I guess I need to find out if my dive suit still fits :smt003.
Nice illustrative pics as usual, I feel like I was there! Thanks Abking!
