I just went to Sports Chalet and they have Scotty rod holders for 23.99 but they don't have any mounting hardware. What do I use to mount the rod holders? I have to outfit a Tarpon 130 and a Search 15 and I want to make sure I mount stuff properly.

No. I'm going to use a flush mount but they don't come with screws, nuts or washers.

IMO: get a rivet gun and use these instead of screws, nuts and washers...

faster and easier to install....

Thanks for the link mooch. I was about to make a post about this. :thumleft:

I'm putting together my drift anchor and wanted attach the guides for the anchor line w/ rivets but there was a bunch of different sizes and couldn't figure out which was the best. BTW, do most rivetrs put some goop down on the hole in the yak before riveting?

If you are mounting something that will receive pressure (like a rod holder or anchor setup), you should use screws+nuts instead of rivets. Furthermore, you should use a backing plate to spread the load too.  Make sure they are stainless steel or marine grade. I prefer the bolts/screws with machine threads (the narrower ones).
Sometimes you can't get to the mounting location and you have to settle for rivets though. Definitely use the type of rivets in the link above, as opposed to the ones at the hardware store.

I am in a similar situation, in that I just got a new-to-me Tarpon and need to rig some flush mount rod holders, a scotty mount, some RAM mounts, transducer, etc. Looking forward to seeing how you set up your new fishing machines! I'll post some pics too...once I get around to installing all of this stuff.

Good luck!

What are people using for backing? Is plywood good?

Not sure about wood, but I think some use vinyl cutting boards.  I used some heavy duty stainless steel as backing plates for my 2 flushmount rod holder brackets and 1 downrigger bracket.  I was lucky in that my father-in-law races cars as a hobby and had easy access to some.

Yep, a thin plastic cutting board works well.

Thanks I'm going to get busy outfitting this weekend. Sounds like I need to go to Home Depot for hardware, Walmart for a cutting board and Sport Chalet for the rod holders.

Ross Dress for Less stores have some cutting boards in the kitchen stuff at fair prices.
As backing, if you can't get some kind of plate of cutting board, etc. in there, try to at least get some "fender"(big wide) washers, and Gooping has the advantage of letting you stick the washer up inside while you reach for the (nylon insert "locking")nut, tho you could use some masking tape.

I did it. I found Scotty powerlock rod holders at Sportsman's Warehouse in Rocklin for 15.99. I got the hardware at Home Depot and a cutting board at WalMart. I installed the rod holder with flush mount on my Search 15. I don't know how I.m going to rig the Tarpon 130t. I may have to just use flush rod holders on the Tarpon. Wouldn't flush holders put less stress on a yak that doesn't have internal access for screws and a backing plate?
