Yesterday, I went out to that incredibly beautiful place I told you about....the Cosumnes River Park (Parking Lot and launch point managed by the Nature Conservancy and for paddle-craft only).....

I caught a 3-pound (about, I don't fuss with weighing them) largemouth and a just-legal smallmouth.

Fall Colors......my god......so pretty out there.

Bass are far from my area of expertise, but I think the little guy is a LMB.  Maybe one of the biologists can way in!

The biggee is BEAUTIFUL and I would have guessed bigger than 3 lbs.!

looks like a LMB to me too  :smt045

usually SMB have:

*a darker or bronze-like color to 'em
*some have visible tiger-like vertical stripes
* red eyes
* mouths are a lot smaller (of course)

I will yield the-floor-of-expertise-as-to-fish-types....to about anyone...
But......
But.....the little one had VASTLY SMALLER SCALES....did not have the
distinct dark lateral lines that are typical of Largemouths....and a smaller mouth.

Hey----something I didn't tell you about the big one:   When I cut him open he had a VERY LARGE crawdad in him.   Now, I do know from big and little crawdads and this thinger was a whopper.

So I was cut'in him open and out flops this giant 'dad...and my eyes get big....and there-at-the-sink I utter a low whistle....and then I say aloud to the Bass, who is not listening.....:   "My God, what could you have possibly been THINKING...!!!...???..."......

Like man, here's his tummy FULL of Giant Crawdad and......what on earth is he DOING, chomping down on my minnow-plug....LIKE he was HUNGRY...or something...!!!...???....    (Minnow-plug...which was what I was trolling with, a diver/floater, about 3-inches long).

OK.......you guys are absolutely right.

My wife is cook'in the big'n as I type this post.....
......the littl'n is still in the fridge and I went & took a look.

Those LMB and SMB pictures shown by the LINK clearly show that
the lead dorsel fin on a SMB has many more "spikes" than the LMB which
definitely has 8.

So my little fish has 8 spikes.

That's interesting.   Thanks.

I learned the way to tell the difference was by the jaw. If the jaw ends behind the eye with the mouth closed its a Largemouth and if it is equal to the eye its a Smallmouth the color helps but if the bass is in deep water they both can look similar in color.

If that little one is barely legal, the big one looks like a 4#-5# to me. Nice fish!
