I saw that a few people had as goals for '08 to keep fishing journals.  I've been doing this for many years, and, even though it makes me a bit self-conscious (come on, I'm capable of that!   :smt003) I've posted my journal compilations on here the past couple of years.  Keeping a journal is a data collection trip for me, and I just do it on my calendar.  I would actually like to make it more of a writing thing along with the data, and NCKA reports have actually fulfilled much of that desire.

Here's the '07 tallies for a few data points:

Yak-Salmon trolling trips - 18, 12 solo - 6 legal kings to 21.5#
Yak-River fishing trips - 17, 12 solo - 4 adult fish on, 1 smolt landed (see why I like the ocean!)
Yak-Rockfish/Ling trips (OVERLAP w/ many of the salmon trolling trips) - 26, 16 solo
Yak-Lingcod - 39 legal lings to 23.5#, 34 released including the biggest and another couple 20ish's
Yak-Black Rockfish (most common species up here) - 136 caught, 109 released
Fish-Killer Ratio:  about 1 black per trip and a ling every 5 trips.
Speared 5 fish, all in January
2 solo night-crabbing missions and a couple of day-time with a total of ONE legal crab!
Pulled 14 abs on 10 trips w/ one 10"er

and, for the coolest data point:  13 NCKA hookups w/ 13 different members (multiples included Cape Mendo w/ 6 other members {Mendo Crew} and Shelter Cove w/ 5 other members {Monterey/Bay Area Crew}).

It was a good year, and the goal for '08 is to have another one with more quality NCKA hookups.   :smt001

40 solo trips and 39LINGs! That's more than just plain madness....that's NUTTY!

I bought one of those binder type tidebooks and enter times fished, fish caught on what, and the miles.....it has space at the end of each weekend and each day to write your info. on it.    15$  and it looks like a police ticket book.

i'll add up some more totals and one up ya' with a few pics along the way :smt002

Dang AK, now my paltry 20 fishing days seem like, well, half of what they should be! :smt003

On topic, I'm all about keeping a fishing journal. I kept one with my dad over about 20 yrs of fishing.
One of my favorite little post fishing rituals is the rinsing of gear then settling into a chair or hammock with a cold beer, and entering the day's details in the journal (along with any photos). If I have time I put in an illustration using colored pencils.

No worries, FH! We still think you're Weird! LOL!

Good job on the fishing log, Abking! I usually keep tabs on my trips by taking a pic or two. But its those camera-less trips that slip through the cracks.
Looking at my Fishing 2007 folder, there are 3 main folders: Kayak, Shore, and Boat. With dated sub-folders inside each. There are about 25 kayak, 30 shore, and 5 boat fishing trips logged. But there are at least 20 more various trips not logged because I forgot a camera, batteries dead, etc.
Maybe it IS time I started keeping a written log. Alright, THAT is my New Years Resolution!

Yes YOU SHOULD!   is it an open enrollment?

Oh yeah, PK, I've been thinking of it quite often lately - Salmon opener is the second Saturday in February I think.  And, of course, Adam, it's open to whoever's into making the trip.  Last year (March 2 and 3) it was Sincoast/PK, Sackyack/Etienne, Swellrider/Hawk, MBYakker/Chris, Sailfish/Sonny and myself/Eric.  Four of us trolled for salmon on Friday evening and most of us had an epic trolling day on Saturday where the wind switched on us and everyone was really strong in the challenging conditions a couple miles from the launch.  We caught and released some rockfish while trolling, but we had no good salmon action other than PK's Crocodile getting hammered and I had a head-shaker on for 3 seconds or so late on day 2.  The bite kicked in within 2 days and I scored 3 fish in two days (March 5 and 6) to 10#.  That good start led to lots more trolling hoping for the return to glory - with a score with AsaBSpade on March 16.  The season capper came with the 21.5#er in July with Hawk out of Trinidad, but I want more - MUCH MORE SALMON!   :smt007

So the hard part is timing the bite, and March was the best month this past year, as far as yak-accessible salmon at the Cove.  I'll be watching the conditions and seeking reports when the season starts, so, just as last year, we can shoot for a March weekend and hope for the best.

Is that called "Tide Log", Adam?  I had one years and years ago and my buddy Moose had one this past Fall that reminded me that I've always meant to get another.

That's good stuff, Sean.   :smt001

March is ALWAYS WINDY down these parts. I was dreaming of RF jiggin in GLASS, that salmon chasin' takes too many "planet alignments" :smt013
Summer-Fall is my vote, when the swell is NON-EXSISTENT for a week or at least, forcasted to be LOW. (Im still just a boy) :smt009

...and Yes on the "Tide Log" it has all the time/tidal/distance calculations and other junk to factor in.
