Hey All - I did a Halibut fishing tour at MBK over the weekend and I'm hooked. So looking for some advice on getting into my own kayak.

I did the tour on a Prowler 13 and liked it quite a bit. The guide told me that some of the newer Old Town boats, while wider and more stable, can be pretty slow in the wind/current. He suggested a good way to get started is find a cheap prowler 13.

I'm trying to keep my total investment under $1K to get started, so I'm def looking used, at least until I know this is something I'll do frequently for a long time. I found a Trident Ultra 4.7 and I'm pretty tempted to buy it but wanted to get some advice here. At least in the beginning I will be fishing 100% off of Pacific Grove - likely the Coral street beach. Is there a reason why no one seems to make 15' fishing kayaks any more? Should I be concerned about buying a ~ 10yr old kayak? It seems like a good boat, but wanted some confirmation before I start spending $$.

Thanks!

Go for it!  15' boats have lots to offer, as stability and tracking are enhanced by the length - not to mention storage.

The Prowler 13 is a great kayak. I still have two in my fleet.

Thank you all for the warm welcome and links to all the kayaks. Really hoping to find a kayak in the Monterey area.

The Ultra 4.7 (and or 4.3) were good kayaks. Ocean Kayak only produced them for a few years, based on a popular design in New Zealand. I owned a 4.3 for a while and won a 4.7 in the MBK tourney, back in 2015. The 4.7 paddles ok but needs a rudder in my opinion. Because the way the hull is built, it is very succeptible to wind. And it’s pretty heavy.
I may have to sell my Prowler 13 soon, if interested. Its in good condition, yellow, circa 2014 model. I’m in Marina if you want to check it out. Also have this yak for sale right now: https://monterey.craigslist.org/boa/d/marina-2016-predator-13-kayak/7754348272.html

Hey there, I found a used scupper pro for cheap, 200$ and fixed it up for fishing, added a trolling motor and pontoons on the rear. It's a great kayak to get started, lighter than most fishing kayaks. I am thinking of booking a trip with MBK in the next month, if you are interested in going out again, LMK, I have added you to my buddy list. I frequent Monterey/Carmel area often and also spearfish and scuba dive so I am always looking for buddies in that area. I was just down to Coral street and Point Lobos last week, had a great time. Let's keep in contact, take care, Ron.

Welcome, PG newbie.
Are you pondering what I’m pondering?

Prowlers are tough to beat. I love the older Old Towns that REI sold. The 135 Loon is spacious, stable enough to stand up in. Tri-ply construction. Great lake boat but I found it slow in the ocean. My favorite, because it’s almost as effortless to paddle as my sea kayak, is the Scupper Pro. Mine has a rudder and it’s a great fishing boat.
