FISHING MOSS LANDING

HAVE THIS WEEKEND OFF. CONSIDERING FISHING OUT OF MOSS LANDING. ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR WHAT TYPE OF FISH. THOUGHT ABOUT GOING NORTH  AND COASTING BACK FOR WHAT EVER WILL BITE

You could fish for sand dabs with small strips of squid, or mooch for a stray salmon if you mark bait balls, or you could drag the bottom for halibut.

Bulldog - I caught my biggist striper ever trolling a large plug, ( Big Mac ), along the beach just south of the harbor entrance at Moss in 1981. This was in a PB although I don't see why you couldn't do it from a yak. You really need to keep your eye on the breakers! We had to make hard 90 degree turns several times to ride over an early breaking wave. Also, this was in June. I think it's a little late in the year for bass in that area. Tom

I am really STOKED right now. I just returned from my first ocean yak trip. Launched out of Moss Landing :

I paddled out and north. Pulled some squid just off the bottom. The swells were about two feet with an occasional larger one. So it was kinda rough and the coffee i had before i left, didn't quite like me about a half hour into it. But, the Bulldog braved it through for about another hour and a half. No luck, but what a great feeling. Would have stayed longer but, have work today at 1pm.

I must say that i was a little apprehensive about going alone and thinking about the guy you referr to as the "Landlord". I must say though, if anyone is a little nervous just do it!! I felt comfortable pretty fast.

Glad you had fun Bulldog. Nothing like being on the ocean in a yak. Spend enough time on the water and you'll find the fish.

 I have yet to go out by myself and I'm not sure this is the right message to be sending out to newbs, especially if conditions are not ideal but to each his own...

Glad to hear you had a good time on the Big Blue.

If you launch from Moss again, paddle north about 2 miles and find the pipeline. It is a sewer line that runs out into the water and is completely covered by a huge pile of rocks. Tons of rockfish and lings there. Also a good chance to hook up with a halibut on the edges of the rockpiles. Then just drift back to Moss, dragging the bottom for halibut, stripers, salmon, sharks, rockfish, etc.

Scroll over the 'sewer' and your GPS coordinates will be displayed on the left. There's a better sewerline to the south of Moss but then you'd have to paddle upwind/swell to get back to port.

I see all the great photo's of you all with some great halibut. Hoping to experience that soon from a kayak. If not, there is always next year.

There is still fresh water though. Hoping to get out to san luis reservoir this weekend!!
