yes, it's me.

So yes, your trip is being used by that org to support closing down more areas.  This pic is from their propaganda on Facebook.

Thats funny Sonny was on the same trip. Some of the folks on the boat were from the Giant Kelp Restoration Project. When they posted about it on the Giant Kelp Restoration page on Facebook, they said the 3 SMCAs on the monterey peninsula should be turned into no-take SMRs…because fishing hurts the kelp. The Ricketts SMCA, Pacific Grove SMCA, and Carmel Bay SMCA allow recreational take of finfish (and commercial harvesting of kelp, ironically). I doubt their petition will gain any traction. But its something to keep an eye on.

Very interesting, tell us more!

I am a volunteer with MLML for the last 5 years.  They scheduled around 6 fishing trips each year to survey fish in Monterey and Half Moon Bay area.  If you are interested, I will PM you the information.

Yes, please!

I think most of you know my thoughts on these trips.  I will say that I went on one of these a couple years ago, to see in person what it was about.  We went to Ano Nuevo, which is a known high producing spot that became an SMR.  Then we went somewhere on a random flat outside the SMR and didn't catch much.  We already knew we wouldn't catch much by the maps.  It was supposed to be a random sample.  Random sampling in an MR has a high likelihood of hitting a good reef.  Random sampling outside the SMR has a high likelihood of hitting mud.

My concern is that people are making A/B comparisons between inside and outside SMR, and in fact, that is what the kelp dude is doing.  They should be making A/A and B/B comparisons, comparing the spots against themselves over time.  The science asserts that B should improve due to overflow effect.  I don't believe that is possible due to today's fisheries management practices of managing to MSY levels.

I sort of find it funny after reading the Cannery Row books recently that one of the MPA's is named after Ed Ricketts who made his living harvesting the intertidal zone :smt044
