I can't make it, but good luck with the fishing and navigating the MPAs.  To help, here's a brief copy the latest MLPA regs as they go into effect on Friday 9/21/2007.

Portuguese Ledge State Marine Conservation Area

Edward F. Ricketts State Marine
Conservation Area

Permitted/Prohibited Uses: Take of all living marine resources is prohibited except:

    * The recreational take of finfish by hook-and-line is allowed.
    * The commercial take of giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) and bull kelp (Nereocystis spp.) is allowed by hand in the area defined by subsection 165(c)(4)(D) under the following conditions:

          o Any individual kelp harvester with a valid permit issued pursuant to Section 165 may take no more than 12 tons of kelp from the portion of Administrative Kelp Bed 220 within the Edward F. Ricketts State Marine Conservation Area in any calendar month.
          o Duplicate landing records must be kept on board the harvest vessel in accordance with the requirements of Section 165.

Additional Restrictions: Within the portion of the Point Lobos State Marine Reserve which also falls within the boundary of the Point Lobos State Reserve (State Park Unit), restrictions on boating and diving activities exist. Contact the California Department of Parks and Recreation for current restrictions.


Point Lobos State Marine Conservation Area

And I don't want to turn this into a political thread but I just wanted to point out something I noticed recently.
--The Portugese Ledge SMCA prohibits take of finfish (except pelagics). I hadn't read the fine print and just assumed it was like other SMCAs and allowed angling for finfish..D'OH! That sucks!
--Ed Ricketts SMCA is (by my estimation) the only SMCA prohibits spearfishing. Bummer.

I think the only MPA that Tom will encounter is Carmle Pinnacles SMR. Watch out Tom! I spoke with a DFG official last wknd at Monastery and asked about placing bouys out there to mark the boundary of the Pinnacles SMR and he said it wasn't feasable due to waves, current, etc. He surmised that the DFG would just have to patrol it heavily and issue citations...then the word would spread, and people would avoid it altogether. I told him that was LAME!

Hey Tom, im down for that. I will be there @ 6:30-7ish.

Kimo: Sounds great!  I'll try to get there by 6:30. 
SMR's: I was out at SWS Pinnacles last week with my simple GPS plugged with the #'s, and the easiest place to cross the line without realizing it is just as you round Pescadero Pt   and head out toward Cypress at about the Tower House. Seem to recall that corner of the SMR gets into about 90 ft of water, maybe less, there.
 I've since added waypoints halfway between the two on the north boundary and the same on the east boundary, just so the lines will be clear as I'm moving:

Midway on North (Tower House) side:
36 33.65
121 58.05

Midway on East (Carmel) Side:
36 33.375
121 57.60

I now wish I had a fancier GPS that could draw a line between the points, or even take it from a computer, but I'll just keep well clear, which is best anyway, at first.

I've also laminated the chart from the D F&G website and printed out the restricted take stuff.
I bet a nickle that I run into someone on the beach when I land that tells me the whole area is closed to fishing and that they are going to report me.  I just hope I have the ability to pretend I don't hear them.

I do hope they are able to put out some buoys at the Lover's Pt SMR.

Ok Tom, I will stay close  and try to avoid a citation. Good chance of getting decent ling's and other RF closer in as well. Ocean looks like it might cooperate.

I am temped but doubt that I will make it.  I did not realize how big that tilted rectangle is relative to the pinnacles itself.  Wish I could join you.

Tom, good luck and let us know how you do with the MPA navigating.  I'm guessing there will be a lot of learning as we go on all this. It also sounds like a bunch of us will be investing in decent GPSs soon. I wonder how long it will take for the GPS base layers (like Garmin BlueCharts) to start including these MPAs.

I too have printed the maps but have not looked at my GPS yet.  I dont know the area that well yet.  Dove off of pebble beach last week.  Is that still open there by the club?  Thanks JR
