Tried Davenport for the 1st time in a while on Saturday.  Client Joel and Fraknefishing along for the ride.

We tried for flatties out front for 1 1/2 hrs...Nothing beyond a few sand sole (interesting fish, about 20", I later cleaned them like sandabs)  Drifted the entire reef at 35-50 FOW to Scott's Creek and back to the landing for zilch.  It was emarassingly slow.  lucky joel is a fisherman and knows that's what happens sometimes.

suneday I had a clinic at MBK>  the folks down there are still basking in the joy of a successful Fishing Derby, thanks to all who attended and made it happen.  $1500 to MBSTP!!

Clients John from down near big Sur and his pals Roy and Bob.  We headed towards the Cannery kelp beds, and it was SLOW.... at around 10am, I went scouting sort of desparate to find the fish......Luckily we did.

I pulled up on blue rockfish and got hit immediately on my next drop.  OK.... C'mon over here guys!!!!!

We worked this one area with a rock in 55 FOW for the next 45 minutes for near limits for all.  Whew!  Didn't want 2 skunky days in a row!!  spot was just shy of the reserve near Aquarium.  Browns, Blues, kelp rockfish and one black and yellow.   Jeff Stokes was along for the ride on sunday and was a big help, good fisherman who'se registered here, but stil shy (c'mpon jeff, get posting!!)

I'm afraid that rock will be off-limits when the new MPAs come on line, don't really know, but I'm "afraid" that might be the case.

I'll do some research and post a separate thread re MPAs, or if someone else beats me to it, right now I'm going to the beach tro boogie board and maybe surf.

Glad you caught some fish, man. Davenport's been slow for me this year too.
Be god to see you soon, let's go get 'em...

I now, wierd isn't it.  really the whole N Coas up to ano has been strangely slow.  Even Bean H not producing like last year.

I think it's water temps maybe, stayed cold all summer.

You up for a big drift with me.  thinking of harbor launch, and Captiola Wahrf retrieve.  I can lock my electric scooter up at Captiola and use it top retrieve my car at the harbor...  Looks like the area off Pleasure point might be producing some flatties right now.....

I lost two fish again at Davenport and spent part of this weekend re reading and practicing my knots. Haven't been on the water that much and really enjoyed the paddle with Joel and Allen this past weekend. Allen pionted out that their wasn't as much kelp as usual in the area which became real apparent as we paddled along. Nice meeting you Joel hope to hook up soon. Gotta love this sport, Frankfishing aka Franenfishing :)

I read it as FRANKENFISHING,  :smt003.

Last two times I was up that way I did okay. Best right in against the kelp for me.

I think a few drivebys by GWS have everything hiding up there.

I've been thinking about doing the SC harbor to Capitola run, but I don't know what I would do with my equipment. It's easy to lock up a kayak, but I can't imagine leaving gear there while I go get my car at the harbor. I have even thought about drifting to Capitola and paddling back to SC against the wind. What did you have in mind regarding all your gear?

Thread jack!

Paddling santa cruz to Capitola (or vice versa) is going to be my off -season workout!

Need somebody with a double rack to paddle with and for shuttle service back to launch.  After a few of those trips, a 10 mi day trolling for salmon will be a piece of cake.

fishcamp:

If two of us go from the harbor to capitola, one of us stays with the gear, while the other runs back to the harbor for the vehicle on the scooter.

In a weekday of Aug-2007, I fished at Davenport at South reef between 35 FOW and 60 FOW for ~2.5 hours. I only got a few bites. I drifted along reef. Saw very little sign of fish on FF! A Party boat was next to me at one time and it only got a few RF.
Now I believe Davenport is fished out. I really hope the reality is opposite.
