... when they do bite somebody, it's almost never a sustained attack. It's a one-time bite, and then they leave.

Well, that's reassuring. Sort of. Or not really...

... the shark only took one leg, so it's really not a big deal.  I kept fishing ...

“I’m going fishing.”  They said, “we will go with you.”

Why are people worried when they are in kayaks?  I've never understood that, like is there an inherent fear the shark will somehow capsize, and then attack the struggling person?

One of a few direct experiences from NCKA members alone:  https://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=93203.msg1051246#msg1051246

Unreal.  I've never heard of that.  Most of the time I'm in the water I'm scuba diving, and I'm looking for GWS (they're basically impossible to encounter with scuba gear, far too loud, and there's never been an attack).
I'd rather be swinging...

In this sport, if you're prefacing each trip with worrying about a shark, you're not long for this gig.

The animals are right there with us, and they will eventually show themselves or even grab your shit.

I know like 10 guys who have been hit by the Man in their yak - only one got a small cut.  Not saying it's not scary as hell, life-changing serious shit.  What I'm saying is, if you do this sport, you are spinning the GWS roulette wheel - period.

My advice is to be ready by doing the basics of safety - dress for immersion, have redundant navigation and communication, buddy up, stay in shape - stay ready.

And get the camera going as fast as you can.   :smt001

Being an honorable sportsman is way more important than what you catch.

Good advice indeed, I think our chances of flipping is much higher than a gws drive by, let alone an attack.  But you never know, I do believe the population is increasing and we can't rely on general public stat, kayakers are a lot more exposed than general public stats.  But, no doubt, if its salty, they are there.

Heck nowadays it seems like it’s more dangerous just leaving the house ..

Pretty much always the most dangerous thing you do is the drive to whatever it is you're doing.
