Fellas!
Just wondering what kind of suits guys wear winter and spring.
Wet/dry? Dry suit?
I’d love some tips and good locations to go find gear in the bay. (Other than our own classifieds here)
Gloves? Boots?
Thanks! :smt003

The ocean temp stays relatively steady throughout the year. That means if you’re heading offshore the proper “dress for immersion” gear doesn’t really change from one season to the next.

I prefer a dry suit with an insulating layer and warm socks underneath. I wear a pair of neoprene NRS booties over the drysuit. It does get a little stuffy on hot days, but I’ll take minor discomfort over potential hypothermia any day.

The other option is a wetsuit and booties. I personally wouldn’t go for anything under 3mm, but some do. If you get a wetsuit, you’ll be happier with one that has a “relief zipper”.

As for where to get this stuff, you’ll probably just have to wait until the SIP orders are lifted or buy online. Check out California Canoe and Kayak or any other paddling shop. If you go the wetsuit route, a surf shop would also be an option (but surf suits don’t have relied zippers).

I also have an 3mm NRS Ultra FJ w/ layers for all seasons...only because I like that it doesn't "catch" water during surf launches and I'm use to wearing wetsuits half my life. Also have 3mm neoprene boots and 2mm gloves.

You can't go wrong with either a drysuit or wetsuit (as long as you're dressed for immersion), but many decide depending on comfort/budget reasons.
