this topic has probably been talked about before but i cant find any info on it
I have a tarpon 120 (fisher) and i want to install a fish finder i understand all the mounting and battery storage and so on the thing im not sure about is the transducer it self. is it mounted on the inside of the boat? How does it work through the plastic. maybe someone can tell me how this technology works. The glue that mounts the trans to the inside of the boat has no effect on the finder itself? which battery tends to work the best the bigger ones or multiple AA? Any info would be appreciated.

Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

I installed my transducer inside the hull using the foam donut method and put a little water in it when I go out.  Some folks glue it in with epoxy or goop (making sure there are no bubbles) but I like it to be removable so I can switch the portable FF to other boats. It seems to be quite accurate.  -Matt

Same here.  I hope to one day be more like Mooch (in terms of kayak ownership), so having the ability to swap the FF is convenient.

I used the goop in mine... the only thing i was told to be careful for was that there were no bubbles left in the stuff before you sink the trans into it... it works just fine.  Make sure you scuff the bottom of the yak and the trans a little bit so the goop sticks good!

I "gooped" mine inside the hull. Most transducers come with the proper epoxy. I did the pool-noodle deal first but didn't like it. Seemed shoddy IMO. Then I rigged a modified version of the pool-noodle technique by using a foam beer-coozie. That worked well, if not better than the pool noodle. But decided to go with the permanent install after all the messing around w/pool noodles and beer-coozies. Set it, and forget it!

Since I had already epoxied the transducer into my OK Drifter, when I bought another kayak, a T140, I just purchased another transducer (that works with my Matrix 27). So I can still swap the FF head unit back-and-forth between yaks because I attach it to the yak using the Micro RAM mount...if that makes any sense.
There is a link to my T140 in my signature if you want to check that out. But I don't think there are any pics of the actual transducer. Will have to upload one soon.

Good luck,
PK

I know this is an old post but I'm kinda having the same issue as far as trying to find a spot for my transducer. I know the scupper hole route won't work that great cause it'll just smash into the pavement when I try to kayak in, and although I installed rails to the front of the kayak, its not sturdy enough for me to trust it not snapping off. Do you guys have pics of how you did your in the hull mounts? Any ideas? Thanks fellas.

I goop the transducer inside the hull and keep the battery inside the rear hatch. Never had any problems and it is completely hassle-free.
