Jeff and I launched from the south end of Monastery beach around 8am and paddled straight to our little reef we found last wknd. Turned out to be somewhat difficult to find, even with the aid of my GPS...its was like finding the island from LOST; invisible to electronic devices! We couldn't find it so we just stopped paddling and dropped down. Nothing. Not even a bite. I was kinda worried we wouldn't find it again. So I said reel em up and lets move. Paddled around searching with the aid of my FF and GPS. Eventually we found the spot and the FF showed fish stacked up on top of each other. SWEET! That was actually how I knew we found it---all the fish on the screen.

Dropped down and got hit immediately. Brought in a big 19 inch copper and put it on the game clip.
Since the wind was so mellow, we were able to stay on top of the reef without repositioning too often. Pretty cool. At one point I was beating Jeff 6 to 1 but he made a valiant effort to come back and evened up the score at 25 to 25 about two hours later. Our little competition made me keep an accurate count for the first time---I usually just guestimate or lose count after 10.

I pulled ahead with a couple doubles and held onto the lead to get the W. The final score was 36 to 32. And I only got about 5 or 6 blues. Mostly reds, coppers, canaries, browns, olives, bolinas, starries, chinas, and a few blacks. Jeff even stuck around the kelp near the launch on our return to try to catch up but it just wasn't meant to be.

We got most of our fish on homemade shrimpfly teasers above swimbaits or scampis. I got a few on a 3.5oz megabait too (with a hoochie trailer). No keeper lings though! Don't know what I'm doing wrong. I think I hooked into a big one with a small octopus I accidentally hooked but it was only on for about 10 seconds. First octopus I've hooked...sent it back down and got slammed...man I wish that fish would've stayed on.

I need to take more pics while on the yak. Forgot my camera this time but Jeff took his out to snap a few quick pics. Here's two pics of me with some fish. One pic shows a nice canary I released.

Hey PK,

Nice catch :metal Sounds like you got the fish finder working good? Btw, the scrambler is perfect. We were lucky enough to find another in great shape.  Both boys are set up :thumleft: Still waiting for mine to come in. It's been a month since I ordered it :smt012  I've met quite a few NCKA members lately, Aaron at MBK, Mooch, Big J, Hojoman and Bill yesterday when the family and I went to the grand opening at the Boat House in San Carlos. Really enjoyed meeting all of them. Sure is nice to see there is a lot of good people involved in NCKA smt001. Congrats on a great day of fishing. Keep us posted on the next BIG DAY :smt008 should be getting close.

Ben

Way to bag 'em. :smt023.  Sounds like a nice spot.  I'm gonna skirt up a couple of my megas - your hootchie idea sounds productive.

Great report PK and a good looking red. I'm still hoping this year I get one. My deckhand friend knows how long it has been and always makes sure everyone else knows it.  I do get my share of nice lings though, but I still want a red. My son already has three good ones to his name and he just started going out in the ocean last year. I may get lucky at the HMB event in a fre weeks and nail one right outside the harbor

I love our little corner of paradise.  Great that you got the variety there SC.  darn that you didn't have your camera on a day like you had.

Shasta, please refer to the thread on released fish for how to improve their odds.  I personally carry one pound ball and a release set up that works great.

Great report and pix, JK. It's funny how a full game clip can elicit such a broad smile! :smt002 And, yes, you folks are very fortunate to live in paradise--I'm glad you share it with us urbanites!

Thanks for the info buddy! Maybe you'll get to test that theory one day when you actually catch a rockfish.
I leave no floaters behind and revive all of my rockfish. How, you ask?
Magic.
And one of these: http://www.sheltonproducts.com/SFD1.pdf

I've got 5 of em, and will loan you one when we hook up to go rockfishing.
Thanks for the support guys (and gals),

Nice Report!

The water looks perfect. Hope is the same for this sunday. Planing on going out and testing out some old time rigs for the lings.

Hey sincoast how deep was that reef?  And was it the same one near the north shore where sackyak met up with you two weeks ago.
