I am trying to find some reading material online to help me figure out if there is a visual way to differentiate between the two strains of Cutthroat trout in Pyramid Lake. It seems there is the strain that the tribe developed with help of fisheries biologists that has been planted in the lake for some time. Also, in 2006 the tribe started raising (or started releasing hatchery raised fish?) the strain found in Pilot Peak Creek, which is believed to be the same as the strain that went extinct in Pyramid lake decades ago.
It would be fun to know if there is a simple way to distinguish between the two strains, anybody know how?

I would be interested as well. I haven't heard if a difference but a couple of the ones from last week were toothier than others.

The Pilot Peak strain is what is being planted in Stampede and a couple other lakes up that way.

When did the Stampede plantings begin?

Nevermind.  I found the article. 2017 Ca DFW began planting pilot peak cutthroat in Truckee river basin lakes and reservoirs. Very Cool. I figure by 2020 we will have a crack at some real toads!

We got more fish that had a silver color to them, and seemed to be toothier, my bigger fish were almost all a darker brown color with more pronounced red gill plates. At the time I figured it was the difference between males and females...

Off topic but 50-pound LCT used to be commonplace in Tahoe until we fished em out & introduced mackinaw!

I caught one of the small ones earlier this year just after they started planting in Stampede. I was Kokanee fishing when i hooked it. It was about 8" long.
