I'm not understanding the whole "camera and personal alert" security model.  What good is it to record the tweeker and get an e-mail or text when you are away from home?  Those guys are in and out in minutes.  By the time you called a cop, who probably isn't going to do anything but take a report anyways and MAYBE come out if you insist, the tweeker is long gone.  Seems to me the better model for home security is to prevent the break-in in the first place and if they do attempt to get in, then something to scare them away like a loud siren or a dog.

Can anyone testify that a security camera system actually preserved their private property from being stolen, other than maybe waving off the thief who spotted the camera and moved on to another house perhaps?

My views on tweakers, or just plain dirtbags for that matter, are anything less than passive.
Having said that, there was a real problem with the aforementioned in a certain neighborhood in Placerville.
A long time friend sold his house on 5 acres because it got so bad.
A different neighbor installed a camera on the back of his mailbox and caught one of the tweakers stealing the mail. It was enough evidence for the cops to get a search warrant and shut down a big crime operation including drugs, guns and mail theft.
Would I rather there were no video cameras and the good guy could TCOB old school? Hell yea! Life would be so much easier and less stressful. But today's laws are written to protect the guilty and the wrongful, not the good guy. A decent camera may help after the fact, but a great deterrent helps more. The problem is, what is really a great deterrent that, if push comes to shove, won't get you sued?

Need to have a security system that has a robot that can be remotely controlled to chase perps with a weapon. Make sure it can grip the weapon so the perp can't remove it then have it shoot the poor perp in the behind. Can be done, but there are a bunch of legalities one must look into.

With all the stuff one can see and do from a smart phone, this may be the next step in home protection!!!
