I have seen salmon at Monterey as close as the mile bouy but that was several years ago.  I believe that more commonly they school more out in the middle of the bay.

Sorry to torture, but I gotta say the salmon dinner tonight was exquisite!  Briefly marinated in lime, cilantro, garlic and olive oil and then barbecued and eaten hot and moist with french bread, asparagus and rice.  OMG, I was in heaven.  I got 7 healthy freezer packs and tonight's plus another night's dinner that's stowed in the fridge out of the 3 fish.   :smt007

I don't get it. I thought salmon season opens in April. Is it different up north?

That forecast looks a bit marginal, Z.  I'd wait for something less than 8' swells and preferably from the north vs. west - that can make a big difference at the Cove.  However, it may be do-able, you just never know.  Regarding my promise to hookup, I CAN'T do it this weekend!  I'm hoping I can get some good remodeling work done on my house and build WAF for the rest of the month...  Be sure to get in touch though, if you're coming my way, because I may be able to sneak out!   :smt004

Word, thanks for the advice! I'll be up there someday!

Abking,
Your posts have given me the itch to try Shelter Cove, but I have never been there before.  Could you give me directions (or road name) to the launch site you use?  I am seriously considering making the trip up there next week (weather permitting) and would appreciate any help or advice.  Thanks!

Hi Windrider,

Abking is not online, I'll show you the way if you don't mind:

1) Take 101 North toward Eureka (approximately 250 miles from San Jose to Garberville).
2) Take Garberville exit and go through town about 2.5 miles.
3) Turn left on Redway (there is a gas station at this corner).
4) Follow this road to Shelter Cove (about 22 miles)
5) At the end of the road, make a left turn onto Upper Pacific Rd.
6) When this road curves to the right, make a left turn after the motel (there is a Deli store on the right hand side).
7) Follow the road down to the boat launch.

Below is the Google map for Shelter Cove:

Sailfish,
Thanks a lot!  I appreciate your help.  I got a map of Shelter Cove off the internet, but I would have just been guessing where the launch site is located.  Thanks again!
