We are in the market for a dog too. I have been looking at poodles and doodles because of the low shedding aspect etc. These people have some nice poodles available   http://www.bayrockpoodles.com/   They call them Moyens which is between a miniature and the standard (20-50# dogs) Standards can get to 100+#'s which is a lot of dog to fit in the car for a road trip. IMO a boy needs a dog big enough that he can rough house a bit with and big enough to give a degree of protection. Poodles from a reputable breeder are $1500 - $2000+. Doodles are $2000 - $3500. If you go with a Doodle. Know the difference between an F1, F1B , Double Doodle, Multigen Doodle and Australian Labradoodle . Just breeding with a Poodle doesn't guarantee poodle fur. I think it's only about 15% with Poodle fur in F1's.
We just started going to the adoption fairs that the larger pet stores have every 1-2 weeks. We  want to get our son involved in the process and find out what type of dog he is most comfortable with. There you can take multiple puppies out of the pens and sit with them and take them for short walks. Petfinder.com is also a good way to find out what the rescue groups have and where the adoption fairs will be.
My wife said she would like one of those little toy or miniatures (miniatures are bigger than toys), but at the Dublin adoptions fair there was a Shepperd / Rottweiler mix. Beautiful dog. Probably will be 100-120#s. She keeps talking about that dog. So take the family to one of these adoption events, for some hands on doggie time, and they may change their minds about the size and type of dog they want.

My folks are on their second standard.  Get it if you are able to really let it get exercise and invest in serious training.  My folks have no control over theirs, because they are slowing down, and these dogs can leap over a 6 foot fence and run 20 miles.  The first one went through a plate glass window, learned to work light switches, opened the freezer and emptied it of its contents routinely (including a full sized frozen turkey).  It then died of gastrointenstinal torsion due to stress and genes, because they put it in a kennel so they could leave town.  The latest one simply cannot be caught if he does not want to be.  They love these dogs to death, but the dogs control my folks' lives and outsmart the electric collars and everything else.  They've got to treat it like hannibal lecter, like, "OK everyone, make sure all the doors are locked, I'm letting him out of his kennel and walking him to the back door . . . ."

All that said, I recognize that these problems have a great deal to do with training.  I am not blaming the breed.  But getting as standard is a much larger undertaking than getting a mini, I'm guessing.

He's gonna need one with the mini poodle. Awesome little dogs but bpowa is right - often too smart (can be stubborn).
A friend of mine has red one - super loyal and protective, and can be sweet!

I would advise against a Mini or a toy.. They have a high pitch bark.

They are also very smart dogs, and are too smart for their own good.  Maybe dumb it down and get a labrardootle.

Poodles have intelligence of a 2 year old human.  They also go through terrible 2's.

Oh no! Not this again!! :smt001
I will findo the info on D-bugs dad's owners and post it tonight. They are in the Sacramento area. Not sure if they stud him out. He's 3/4 poodle and the mom is 1/2(?).  They are registered I believe.
Poodles are extremely smart and active. That's why you see them used in circuses and shows so much. I really thing bringing the lab traits into the mix helps to mellow them out.
Ok. Back to my self-imposed time out.
Ttyl.

Ok... the Dood's "breeders" have an instagram @the_doodle_bunch and an email: [email protected]
Looking at the instagram, they don't appear to have posted for over a year.  They aren't breeders, per se, more like people that bred their two dogs and sold the pups. Don't know if they are breeding mom and dad anymore, but might stud dad (Tux) out? Idk... that's all I have. Hope this helps.
