I've been hearing stories and reports from a few people that have lived in the area for a while and the story seems to go that there are a few bears scattered in the county... A bear and Cubs supposedly lives behind calero lake in Morgan hill and there has been reports of different bears in other areas. Does any one have any info on the topic? I am lead to believe the only species that would be around here is the North American black bear but that would be very uncommon(not impossible) but uncommon to see.

Wouldn't shock me at all. Throughout the years, especially in drought periods, occasional sighting of bears in Santa Clara County are not unusual. Yes, the only species that we'd experience in the bay area is a black bear. Some friends who have vineyards up here in the north bay see them (and mountain lions) on game cameras set up on their properties. Kinda cool to know that they're still out there.

Since the California Dept of Fish &  Wildlife no longer allows the use of dogs to hunt bear, expect their numbers to increase along with an increase in contact with populated areas.  Really very similar to the mt. lion issue in this state.  :smt011

Maybe up there in the hills btwn Svedal and Mt Madonna...on the west side of Gilroy. I wouldn't be surprised if there were black bears on the east side in Coe park too.

yeah that was a bad move on their part. Okay a select few people may have had valid points for it, but in the end the population is going to get out of hand. The population was at a steady rate when I killed my bear with the use of dogs in redding much like many others but since the ban, numbers are just going to increase and those random bears are gonna start showing up in backyards.
