It depends on the type of perch targeted.  Shrimp or shore crabs for striped perch.  Camo gulp, sand crabs, or mud or sand worms for barred or redtail perch.  Mudworms work best for pile perch, but shrimp works too.  Sometimes squid or clams will do the trick too.

RA70 they can't resist

English please  :smt044

I thought it but he said it.  He was only saying a speargun tip sure attracts perch of many varieties which makes them easy targets.

As seen from underwater there can be good distance between groups of them so when you get one there are usually more close by.

This is great information guys.  I haven't fished the beach for perch in a long time, but want to start again.  The last time I can remember I was on a beach in the Davenport area, north of Santa Cruz.  It was a calm day and I just pitched a small 3" strip of squid behind a 1' surf.  I couldn't believe it when I got a great hit.  I landed an 11 pound salmon!!

Now, I could be hijacking the thread, but do I really need one of those 12' rods?

Kalin's Grubs with a ton of Procure Krill slapped on em are my first pick. Then the Berkeley Sandworms.

I've experimented with tossing spey-style flies and wooly buggers in brown tones - not much success.

Up north I like to toss Lucky Craft Flash or Surf Pointers. They are big baits so you don't hook up often but they slay hawg reds.

I use my 9' steelhead/salmon spinning rod. Perfect for tossing a Carolina rig with a 3/4 - 1 oz weight. Lots of good beaches near you. I have an extra rod if you want to give it a shot sometime.

I have a few steelhead rods but they are bait casting rods.  I'll go check out a 9' rod in the next couple days.  Thank you for the offer.  I see you are in Windsor.  My son just bought a house there by the green.  We both have yak's and love to fish.  Maybe we can meet up sometime.

Depends on where you are. Around Pacifica area I use a 11' rod so I won't have to wade in the water too much. Some waters are just calmer and you can get away with a 7' rod. I think a 9 would be a good all around surf rod.

I like the little Kalins grubs in any of the motor oil color variations. I stick mine on a little red Mosquito Hook, "hammer style".

Like this pic I stole from the web. I get a lot less line twist this way.
