So I got my elite-5 gold that comes with the navionics chip, but I also have a rebate where I can get a free chip for either lake insight pro, nautic insight pro or 1 year of genesis.

I'm having a hard time choosing which chip I want but it will be either lake or genesis since I'll be using the navionics for the ocean.  Since I'll be doing some freshwater too, does anyone know if the lake insight is better than the navionics?

I like the idea of playing around with genesis and making my own maps, but it's only for one year.

Does anyone have any experience with these?

They all have their plus/minus.  The Genesis is fun for your own map creation as well as the ability to log on to the internet & download other users maps of a particular body of water.  Since the program is still fairly young, there are still gaps in the lakes as far as the Genesis maps are concerned.  For example, to cover Lake Don Pedro (assuming it were full) would take over 30 (8 hour) days to cover that lake using Genesis.  It will take some time before we see total coverage of local bodies of water ... not to mention that these lakes all have to become full again for this to happen.

As for the Insight chip.  Both Navionics and Insight have good/bad & some duplication.  If you fish freshwater a lot, I'd most likely opt for the Lake Insight PRO chip but users say that the quality over Navionics chips will vary lake to lake.

Genesis is an online web site that you can actually go look at, preview, etc.  There is a FREE section & a Subscription Section.  If you choose to go the Genesis route, its a 'make your own' type of deal BUT it does grant you access to everyone else maps who has chosen to make them public.  I have a moderately limited exposure to the program only because I test drove it during the Alpha and Beta rollouts.  It appears to be far easier NOW than it was BEFORE to use, navigate, operate, etc..  Several of my maps are loaded on Genesis for public use.

It looks like you can get almost ALL the features as part of their free membership.  The feature that costs $99 allows you yo shade the maps for vegetation, unlimited number of map merges on one body of water and the ability to choose between 'Private' and 'Public' with your map upload.  The FREE version has come a LONG way with what you can do/offer.  Go for the FREE one IMHO

Oh so I'd be able to continue to use genesis after my membership is up?  That was my biggest concern is that it would be worthless after a year since I wouldn't be paying 99 a year to continue.

Regarding the Genesis maps for drought-stricken Norcal lakes...can I attach the transducer to a drone and fly it over the lake?  :smt064
