I'm pouring a few more jigs and wondering if any of you ever fish a 3oz head. I've only fished 4 and 6 from my yak.

Nope, only ever fish 4, 6, and 8.

I usually carry a few 3oz that I hook into live bait (I bought them when the shop was out of 4oz).  They seem to allow the bait to have much more movement than a 4oz and it's super quick for me to switch out from a swimbait.

Yes 3oz has a different fall rate and imparts different action. Physics be damned, it's true.

Ive used 2 and 3 oz plenty.  yes it takes longer to sink, but I think the action is better.

On a nice mellow day with out much wind or current. Or on a drift if I want to fish the top of the column. I always bring options.
I only fish on days that end with Y

I probably use 3oz heads more than any other size. With the rest being 2, 4, or 6oz if I have to.

I use the lightest heads I can get away with, especially for halibut. I've had good luck with 3/4 to 2.5 oz heads in shallow water. I rarely go over 4 oz. if I need more weight than that, I opt for a jig of some sort.

Don't forget to match up the gear with the lure for best results.

Three ounce Dart heads are my primary choice.  I've never used any jigheads over four ounces and that's even when fishing 100 fow.  I'm not a long time resident of NorCal or anything but I never seem to have any problems catching fish even with the lighter jigheads.  I take a medium heavy spinning rod with a Shimano Symetre 4000 out there on occasion and use a 3/4oz head with a 4" paddle tail grub in water up to 40ft deep or so when the rockfish are schooling just to make it more fun!

I fished a few times with 1oz buzz baits & my bass gear at SWS in the 40fow range.  TONS of fun!
