That would depend on who is doing it...

Yeah, it is cool. I just perfer to keep my bait in front of a fish instead of dancing around in the air.  :smt002

Back in the day when I used to have time for trout, my favorite trolling setup was a wolly-bugger type behind a kastmaster or cleo. Remove the treble hook and tie on 8-12" of leader...with a fly on the end. The spoon imparts good action on the fly; it's kinda like using a micro-dodger. But I was using spin gear--not flyrod & reel.

Are you thinking about a mooching reel or fly reel? Because I have a spare Alvey that I will never use, if you want it. It's a large arbor reel so you can pickup (or let out) line quickly but it's single action aka no drag.

Thanks for the offer, but i'm looking at fly reels w/drag.  I plan to use an anchovy pattern fly behind a kicking wiggle disc with a short setback, and run flash off of the dodger.  I figure I can still call it flyfishing with the wiggle disk since "indicators" ie bobbers are largely accepted in the fly fishing community.  :smt003

A single action mooching reel has as much drag as a fly reel.  I think you might like this option.

I have a pretty basic Daiwa M-One mooching reel and a Shimano Convergence mooching rod, 10-20#, 10' 6".  Tons of fun on salmon.  If you've never mooched with one, you don't know what you're missing.  In British Columbia, these types of setups are standard fair for mooching and trolling on the downriggers.

flyrod, down rigger, what you smokin' cuz.... :smt044 :smt044 :smt044

I thought the same thing until I tried it last week (from a PB).  It was a blast, and I would like to start doing it from my kayak.  I guess downrigger flyrod is a big thing in Scandinavia.
just don't call it fly fishing, and those swedes are just damn crazy, just ask my swedish mother  :smt003
Or you can ask a Norwegian!

Fly + Fishing = Flyfishing  :smt003 You're damn right I'm gonna call it fly fishing and the snooty trout fairies can suck my farts as they wave their wands.*   :smt044 :smt044  *This is a joke, and only a joke.  If it were a real insult it would not be followed by emoticons. I thought fly fishing was somethin else all together! Scared me when Pat started talking about drag n stuff, all of a sudden I lost interest...
Live your life, the way you want to be remembered. Don't have any regrets, we only get this one dance to make it count. Start at your eulogy, and work backwards.

I don't know about the down rigger, but I used to catch a lot of smaller stripers back when I used lead core shooting heads. I would often pick some up trolling my way to spots, then switch to casting when I located em or a spot.

Been using downrigger with my fly rod for a few years in the ocean and lower estuary for salmon. Nothing special in the way of equipment-handwinder, line mark at every 10ft, a 18oz. cannonball and downrigger quick release(poorman setup). No flasher or dodger just fly in the 5"to 8" with a flylipp ,wigglefin action disc, magic heads and my favorite a 5" to 6" wiggle bug with rattle.
