I am in high school and love fishing, and I recently bought a field and stream eagle talon 12. We went camping last weekend on the Stanilaus River and I had plenty of time to kayak fish. The current was pretty slow but every time I wanted to work a spot that looked good I would slowly drift away only being able to cast a few times. I always just tied my kayak to a different fallen trees that were in the water.
Do you guys use anchors? Or do you just slowly drift, kinda like a trolling motor from a bass boat?
thanks.

Both and all of those are methods we use.... Some use stake out poles in shallow water but mostly we anchor or drift around. I have a brush clamp I use on bungee chord. Anchoring in current can get you in trouble so have some way to dump the thing fast :smt044
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

look at the bottom of the first page for the gearing and rigging section and in there you wlll find a sticky for a quick release anchor system

Welcome Spook!  :smt006  Fishing in current can be difficult to say the least.  For sure look at the QRAS links, and read others posts on fishing in rivers.   :smt002

Welcome to NCKA Spook!  :smt006  You can also step on land and fish from the bank unless you must catch the fish from kayak like many of us to qualify for AOTY entry.

Welcome aboard Spook!  If you're interested in learning more about kayak fishing then you've definitely come to the right place.  Also, for bass fishing from kayaks, you should check out Yak-A-Bass NorCal.  There is a Facebook page with all the info.  We are a club that is founded on educating people of all skill levels on kayaking, fishing, and the competition side of the sport.  Most of them members are from the Stockton/Lodi/Sacramento area.  We hold most of our events over there on the Delta and have monthly fish and chill events.

Thanks for all the info guys :smt001 @bigmarv1 I like it, its my first kayak so I'm no expert but it has nice tracking and I was much faster than all the others I was kayaking with.  @RingKing I will check out Yak-A-Bass NorCal.

Whatever you do, I wouldn't recommend the Anchor Wizard product that I keep seeing ads for...it doesn't have a way to quickly release/drop the rope. If you use an anchor in current, you NEED to be able to drop it with a quickness!
I would simply suggest you keep the paddle across your lap, and use angles & leverage to make short one-handed paddle stokes to adjust your position while drifting.
Another good technique to stay in one place is a brush clamp like Weimarian mentioned.
Or a Hobie :-)

This was the single most frustrating part for me when I first started kayak fishing. I was doing a lot of bass fishing, and it was really tough to do any sort of slow, finesse presentation without getting blown across the damn lake...

It'll come with time. Practice using your paddle with one hand, and leveraging it against your chest, leg, boat, whatever is handy. Practice paddling like this on both sides of the boat, both forward and backward.

I will practice for sure! Going out this weekend in the Delta and i'll try keeping the paddle across my lap and doing small strokes between casts.
