I may go out from Moss Landing. At this time of the year, are dungeness crabs at shallow water or deep water, or both?  If fishing for rock fish, which way should I go, south or north?

May depend on swells, wind, etc...  I've never fished from a kayak from Moss before but we've had good luck with some assorted RF heading North from the Harbor.

Thanks. How far heading north from the harbor to get RF? I have been there twice but never get RF, only dabs and mackerels.

Crabs are DEEP. Like 200+ FOW. You might get lucky and get into some shallow but I'm pretty sure the otters make really quick work of anything shallow. Sorry I'm really not sure where any good RF reefs are and haven't ever yakfished it.

Where did you go for RF from the PB?  :smt001

You might be able to get a few random RF along the canyon walls (straight out from Moss) but be careful to stay under 240ft, the max depth for RF in our region. I have only pulled RF around there from the Pajaro pipeline area, which is about 3.5 miles north from Moss.
Copy & paste this into google maps: 36.846070, -121.833340 In satellite view or google earth, you can actually see the pipeline. It's covered in a heap of rocks for the entire length...but I'd focus on the 60-80ft section.
I only know of 1 kayaker who claims to have pulled dungies from Moss, but I'm still not sure I believe him. From a boat, sure...much easier to manage 250ft of rope hahaha!
If you really want RF, I would suggest Santa cruz or Monterey instead. And basically forget about the crabs (unless you want rock crabs...which would also be more productive in SC or Monterey).

The only time I've fished Moss was from a PB in February when RF was closed and we were just loading up on dabs. There's tons of sanddabs for the taking but like Cen Coast said, if you want RF I would fish Monterey or SC :smt003

Many thanks. Now I see the pipeline from Google maps :smt001
