Hi folks, im getting conflicting stories from people about cannery row in Monterey from breakwater to Coral Street. Is this area now going to be off limits to rec fishing for finfish as of Dec 06?

Im in the middle, I have no idea.

Any info will be great!

Thanks!

John

Not yet, John.

Here is the link to the process.  They are working on the CEQA document now.

I fully expect them to attempt to implement the new MPA's in 2007.  But, no "final" announcement has been made yet.

thanks Pat for the link!

This is good news either way , i know we have to protect our marine resources and as much as I like fishing there its all for a good cause.

I don't know about that. Wait till it comes to a time when the fish are replenished and see how hard it is to reopen some of the area. Also, they claim they closed 8% of the area. Trouble is they closed 80% of the rock reefs. As, I see it the process is a cave in to the be nice to fish people, because there is no provision in it for fishing these areas ever again.

I'd like to see something like a revolving ten year closure that moves switches protected and non protected areas. Then you would be promoting conservation and fishing. Now, they are not conserving fish they are making them off limits to all fishing.

Well said.  You see how it goes and so can be ready when they hit populated areas near you.

Yeah, thats the part I do not understand. Some legislator proposed that 8-10% become reserves/protected areas. However, we are already limited by depth restrictions, implemented by the DFG! So...technically...they've already protected about 90% of the reefs.

I heard that the Central Coast restrictions will go into effect January 1, 2008. Think I heard it on coastside.
