I send mine in for service every couple years (though they haven't really needed it) to the factory. They replace all bearing and drag washers along with a ultra sonic clean and lube, all for a fee of $39.99.
Can't beat their customer service ;0)

I'll probably do this next January. I've been really happy with my avets. My oldest one is about 4 years old now and has never been serviced. I stow them for launching & landings and rinse them after each trip. A little oil here & there and so far so good.

I do think they are a bit of overkill for kayak fishing, but overkill isn't a bad thing.

What I read is that the bearings in the Avet's allow water.  Others have replaced them with sealed sets & this helps but a GOOD set for a SX model will run $75 & up (about 1/2 the cost of the whole reel).  :smt012

I think the other factor, at least for the SX's is the size.  The spool bearings are fairly small, with the inner spool bearing on the drag side (part #14) being even smaller.  This one is the most problematic for me and the one that gets changed most often.  The slightest bit of corrosion gets amplified.  There is usually no issue with the driver shaft bearings, although I've removed the shields and stuffed the bearings, and the compartment they are in, with grease.

Great info Allen.  I'm finally getting a few Avet's & been reading all I can about preventative maintenance, upgrades, etc...  One forum talked about one specific bearing that can easily be destroyed if there is excessive drag ... maybe that was the Spool Bearing.  Guess I should tear one of these apart to see what makes them tick.

Thanks again!

+1
Avet's service pricing for what you get is reasonable and their customer service was top shelf.
I clean and lube mine every season. Pretty straight forward, especially if you link up with Allen Tani's website with a step by step tutorial.
