I currently have an Elite 4x in my Hobie.  I'm thinking of installing an Elite 5 DSI in it's place.  I've heard that the transducer on this model won't work properly in a "thru hull" installation.  The info that I have found is that the thru hull installation will degrade the signal.  Does anyone have one installed in this fashion and does it indeed have issues?  Thanks.

Why would you want to go with DSI only as compared to HDI or CHIRP.  The DSI unit dates back a few years.  I believe others have shot thru the hull with the DSI such as Alshobieoutback ... maybe Al will chime in on his ... or Pat (Cen Coast).  Unless you are picking it up for a SMOKIN' deal or have a very specific reason to want ONLY dsi, I would not suggest it as a primary when compared to some of the (recently) outdated models such as the HDI which combines both DSI & regular broadband FF technology.

I'm planning on replacing the Elite 4x (no gps)with a ff with gps and a larger display.  I only stated Elite 5 dsi as a "for instance" in explaining what information I'm looking for regarding the shoot thru hull question.  I did see an Elite 5 dsi/hdi unit in Ebay for around $400.  I'm really hoping to spend a little less than that however.  Yea I'm a cheap bastard!  I'm probably going to wait until Bass Pro Shop has it's grand opening in Rocklin to see if they offer a "smokin hot deal" unless something else comes up.  Thanks for the imput guys/gals.  And thanks for the reference Polepole.

I have my elite 5 HDI in the shoot through the hull and it works fine. Of course I'm still figuring it all out but the only thing I don't get is the water temperature.

I would avoid a DSI-only unit and either get an HDI unit (or even a standard 83/200kHz before DSI). But to answer the question about shooting thru the hull...in my experience, the 455/800kHz operates well enough when mounted inside the hull.
I would just get this instead: http://www.basspro.com/Lowrance-Mark4-HDI-Fishfinder-Chartplotter/product/13091106262010/

EDIT: Nevermind, I just saw your other post about buying an Elite 5 HDI from wormguy. Good deal!

Btw I now run 2 fish finders in my Hobie...an Elite 5 standard 83/200 AND an Elite 4 DSI. Both mounted inside the hull. I will be documenting the readings I get from each unit. http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=63278.msg710268#msg710268

Thanks for your comments Cen Coast.  I look forward to your report on how they work.  And I did get the Elite 5 from Oldfart for a smoking price.  Thanks again John.

That's pretty cool Pat.  Ive thought about doing this but was concerned about interference between devises.  Has this not been a problem?

No interference so far. I have the transducers as far apart as possible. Many boats run 2 transducers. I just thought it would be funny to setup 2 fish finders on my Hobie, since I already had em! #poormansHDI
