Thanks for replying Mol!  For the money I spent of my ff I am pissed,  :smt013 I had the condensation problem the 'first' time I took it in the water.  The manufacturer replaced the case 4 times now in less than a year but never replace the 'inside' unit.  I used the FF for the first time yesterday after getting the case replaced but it's still fogging up.   :smt013 I'm going to return my ff during off-season (rainy winter days) so I don't miss any fishing days and this time, I am writing to the 'head' of the company to complain about it.  I really do not want to put silicone grease on the case 'seal' because it might 'void' the 12 month warranty.  :smt011

ron, arent you gonna try that dessicant capsule i told you about? they use it in underwater cameras and it works great.

I'm thinking about but the ff is still under 12-month warranty so I don't want to mess around with it yet; let alone open it myself.  Maybe I should put a 'stink' bomb in it before returning it again to the manufacturer.  Damn Humminbird 47!!!  looks good in literature but poor performance I must say!!! :smt013

That is not a cabezone pictured.  At least I don't think so.  Looks like a monster grass rockfish to me, but I am not the expert.

The pectoral fins are way to small to be a cabezone, in my opinion, and the head is too small.

At any rate, nice fish and nicer cook!!!  I have to do all the butchering at my pad as my wife is down with eating fish, but not so hot on butchering fish.  I like the audience your wife has as she is working on the fish.  Add 3 more cats and 2 more dogs and you have my kitchen during butchering.....  :smt005

Well, I'm far from being an expert myself, but I'm relatively sure that was a cabezon.  I think the angle of the photo might be deceptive.  That sucker had a big head, and the pectoral fins were larger than they appear in the photo.  But as I said, I'm no expert so I could be wrong.  :smt002  In any case it was delicious.  We're having fish soup tonight using broth my wife made from the carcasses.  I can't wait!  (of course, it's lunchtime now, and I'm hungry...)

Usagi Pj,

Get your wife a metal glove.  I use it on rockcod, lings, cabbies, salmon, stripers and catfish.  Trout are so easy to clean, that I do without it.  West Marine have real cheap ones for about $10.

Yeah, that is a good idea, thanks.  She's good, but accidents happen...she did cut her thumb filleting that fish.  Kept right on going though...she's tough.  :smt003  Just got her 2nd degree black belt last week!

Congrats PJ.  Yep.  It's nice to have a fall back when the lings don't cooperate.

When in doubt you can note that neither Cabezone nor Ling Cod have scales.  Cabbies are chunkie shaped.  Lings are long.  Cabbies have little knobs on their heads and big hard plates where the teeth would be.  Lings have big teeth.

All the rockfish have scales.

Ooh...that changes things.  This guy had scales, so it wouldn't be a cabezone.  (I told you I was no expert!)  :smt002  Good call MolBasser!   :notworthy:  I'm still not sure that it's a big grass fish tho...here's what the DFG web site says:

Grass rockfish are green with black or gray mottling, somewhat resembling kelp rockfish except that kelp rockfish are usually brown or gray-brown.

That fish wasn't what I'd call green...any other ideas?

Definitely a grassie. Could be a brown if it had a dark spot on the top of its gill plate. No doubt a good sized grassie, if thats what it is/was.

Thanks for the report,

I still think that it is a monster grass rockfish.

And I do mean monster for that species.  Good job.
