Hey guys, I'm putting a new rack system on my 06 honda accord. Going to be hauling around 2 ocean kayak trident 13's. Just got back from the roof rack store, and they gave me a quote of 600$+tax.. they say i need to drill in the four towers for holding the crossbars, and that a clip in style-window system wouldn't work --and that it is better to go with the custom job.

So what should i do? bite the bullet and spend 600+ on the more permanent sturdy thule setup, or save money and get clip in system with yakima cross bars? Going to give the rack system alot of use hopefully for many years, so dont want to cut corners and have a less than optimal setup. But im a college student so spending sooo much on a rack system makes me want to cry :smt005

is the 600+ an ok deal or am i getting totally ripped off/? Thanks for any insight guys :smt006

sounds about right....check around at all the places, there are a few of them that do it.
If you plan on using it alot for many of years, go with the better (non-clip in type)

thanks for the response. Have an appointment to install it at 4 hahaha. Hopefully by then i will feel better about shelling out the cash for the system..

I thought i would only be spending ~300 :smt013

i don't think you need to drill into your car to transport 2 kayaks around. Those removal feet from yakima/thule are really sturdy and when you want you can always remove it. For a brand new setup you will have to shell out around $400-$500 with locks.

There's gotta be like 60 dudes on ncka that drive similar cars and use those feet that attach to the gutter (like Yakima Q-towers)...compared to 0 that have drilled holes through the roof to install towers/feet. Just saying...unless you're transporting 2 Hobie Pro Anglers, the regular setup s/b sufficient.

I drilled through my campershell to install a track system =)  On my X's 2007 honda civic we did the feet with rubber pads and it was solid. If I recall, we did the stretch kit becuase it was a coupe but very secure. I think you are better off doing a bow and stern line tie down if you are worries about the whole thing flying off.

IMHO I think I'd feel safer with the permanent set up. Let me make this simple for you. How much do you have invested in your kayaks? There is your answer It isn't fun to lose one on the freeway I know.

Well, yeah, I drilled holes in my truck bed to install my rack. But it's a 97 Dodge Ram; not a Honda Accord. :-)
For the kinda money scspearfish831 is talking about...I'd just suggest buying a beater truck for like $1000. Especially if you already live on the coast and drive less than an hour to the spot.

One of my best fishing buddies has been using the Yakima Gutters for over 10 years on his Toyota Forerunner.  He hauls 2 OK Tandems regularly or whatever yak is carpooling for a trip.  The nice thing about them is they are easy to take on and off.

You need to consider head clearance if the bars are too long.  You can get smacked if you're not careful.

Soo Based on what i'm hearing i could have gotten away with the gutter style.. I ended up getting the permanent thule setup because gutter style would only save about 100$. Car should be ready soon. Wish i had more time to research my options and save some money but I'm going on a trip really soon so just wanted everything installed and ready to roll/. Thanks for the input all  :smt006
