I bought a compass designed to mount on a Kayak, but didn't want to permanently mount the bracket or drill more holes.  Also wanted to be able to completely remove it for transport with minimal effort.  Here's how I did it:
1.  Buy a Scotty FF universal mount part number 368.
2.  Buy a cheap small black cutting board from Target.
3.  Cut and shape a portion of the cutting board to fit the compass.
4.  Mount shaped cutting board piece to FF mount using 3/4" SS bolts.  Use the FF mount as a template to mark your holes before drilling.
5.  Mount the compass to the shaped cutting board using compass install directions - 4 #6 SS sheet metal screws.

I've also included pictures of my HB FF 688ci install - same as others posted on this forum.

Looks like a nice custom job. Where did you get the compass? Any recommendations on what makes for a good kayak compass?

Thanks!  I got the compass at West Marine - it's specifically for Kayaks.

I don't know what makes a good kayak compass... :smt003  It's all new to me.  I've been spending a lot of time rigging the yak, learning knots, tieing leaders, creating check lists, and learning by reading the pros on this forum.  I've only made a couple of experimental trips in the HMB harbor, no fishing yet.  My schedule with kids and work has not overlapped with good weather as yet.  Soon...real soon.   :smt001

Here's another option; I used a Ritchie Flush mount compass:

Way to go with the flush mount!  I didn't see those.  That looks like a better option.  It's protected without the need to remove it.  Is that a drilled hole the size of the compass?

I just did the same thing with the same compass.  Did you hook up the power for the light?

Yes, the 688 fits under the cover.  There is a very slight lift of the cover, but not enough to worry about.  I was very careful to establish position before mounting it.  The Humminbird folks said this was their most recent color FF with GPS and 5 inch screen that uses their scupper transducer.

Didn't know they made black cutting boards.  Gonna have to pick one up and cut it to fit my hatch.  What tool did you use to shape it?

You can buy a scrap piece of black seaboard at Tap Plastics for $1.
