As I was driving down to Carmel Saturday I looked over at the breaking ankle slappers off highway 1 and saw poo poo colored waters lapping at the beach in seaside, went further south and the water was like chocolate milk.

I am sure farther out was good but the ominous look of brown waters was distracting. I started to get worried that our whole coast was turning brown and all I would catch that day was brown fish.

Is this Red Tide?

It looked gross and people were playing around in it.

I'd hate to get a mouthful of this stuff.

Lucky further south it was clear and blue. I was worried for a while though.

Red Tide...I was milling around del Monte beach Sunday and the water was pretty gross. It is perfectly clear and blue in Carmel bay though...weird.
I believe it is an annual event spurred by upwelling. Just another transition that the ocean goes through...and the cycle continues.
It has looked brown and gross around seaside for the past couple weeks.

If this is the same organism that causes red tide in San Diego, a night paddle is in order.

These critters phosphores like no other!!  Any disturbance will cause them go glow a real trippy greenish color.

Cast a line through it and the rip.......Back to the sixties baby!  Paddle swirls are very amusing.

Good stuff!
