Depending on your roof rack setup, you might want to try sliding your kayak on/off from the side. I've got a Hobie Adventure, which weighs a ton, and using this technique, I can easily manage it myself (and I'm a scrawny 150lb weakling). This video shows a similar technique as to what I do:



Fortunately, my car is a real beater, so I don't have to worry about scratching it. Also, I slide the kayak all the way on first (like a "+" across the top of the car) before rotating it. And, my "roof rack" just consists of a couple of pool noodles attached to some pvc tubing (about $10 total), which works particularly well with this technique. The only issue I sometimes have is finding a parking space with enough clearance from the side.
