There was a time out at the Hampton Shoal, 3 years ago,  suckers were jumping all over, tail walking … hits one after another, all about 18"… or less…

made me think the future was bright for Bay Hali's….   not…  Wonder what happened…

Apparently, over the last few seasons, there have been a bunch of trawlers fishing just outside the state waters line, scraping the bottom with their destructive nets in search of halibut. And because they fish in federal waters, there's not much that can be done about it. Puts a new spin on the term "local," doesn't it?

wow that sucks….

  Like I said,  they were everywhere…  really amazing,  hope they get back somehow…

First of all, I thought that was normal. Happens to me every time I fish for halibut.

(although ocean conditions probably play a greater role in halibut abundance)

Thirdly, I believe the MB Nat'l Marine Sanctuary extends out beyond 3mi and prohibits most forms of bottom trawling.

That's pretty cool. I never knew Hali's come in school.

couple years back wizard and i were trolling around in his little boat, and had a few jump, plus insane numbers of barely legals hitting everything from bait to lures...

Now i suppose i know what it looked like under the surface

That definitely is not what I imagine is happening when I fish for butts around here, seems to me I pretty much gotta hit em on the bottem or wake them up and have a really nice looking piece of bait in order to get a bite.
